Charles Price Obituary

Price, Charles DaveCharles D. "Dave" Price, M.D., a beloved physician, died peacefully following a brief illness at age 97. Dr. Price performed the first operation at Winter Park Memorial Hospital when it opened in 1955. He was a good man; wise, compassionate, trusted, and loved by everyone because he treated each person as though they were his best friend - and they were. Throughout life, Dave Price kept his farm-boy charm, masculine physique, love of the outdoors, and natural sense of humor. He was born December 27, 1916, and raised with his younger brother, Dan, in Palatka, Florida. His grandparents and great-grandparents were Florida pioneers and lived nearby, although making the 30 mile trip to his grandfather's home required half a day of travel over dirt and clay roads. Dave's life spanned the Great Depression, World War II, Korean War, numerous presidents and the greatest period of social change in American history. He graduated from Florida Southern College in 1939, where he met Frances Turner whose father was senior pastor at First United Methodist Church in Orlando. In June, 1941, he married Fran who preceded him in death in 2008, after 57 years of marriage. After obtaining a Masters Degree in Parasitology at New York University he worked with the New York Zoological Society. He was an accomplished pianist and also played the pipe organ on special occasions. Dr. Price received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and served in the Army Medical Corps during WWII, and during the Korean War as Chief of Surgery at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. In 1954, Dave and Fran moved to Winter Park and became members of First United Methodist Church. He served as Chief of Staff and Board Member of Winter Park Memorial Hospital. Dave was a Board Certified surgeon and a member of local, state, and regional medical associations including the AMA, American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons. Dr. Price is survived by his two sons, Alan (Sue) and Chad (Pam), grandchildren Bryan, Travis (Angie), Janet Cawley (John), David Mathewson (Tara) and great grand children - Rachel, Renee, Kiersten, Cody and Julia. Cesar Alierta, a Spanish exchange student who lived with the Prices in 1962-63, is also considered part of Dave's family. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 9 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church in Winter Park, 125 N. Interlachen Ave, with a reception in the courtyard following the service. Arrangements are being handled by Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home of Goldenrod/Winter Park (407-677-5091). In lieu of flowers, Dr. Price requested that donations be made to United Methodist Church of Winter Park or to Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital.

Not sure what to say?

May 23, 2014

My mother just sent the article from the paper. Not sure if the child Dr. Brown had referred to about watching the surgery Dr. Price did on a small child was me, but he had done a blockage surgery around 1am when I was small(DOB 02.29.64). My parents were told that I only had hours left, when they decided to go with Dr. Price on his opinion. My mother and father always talked about how great/super nice Dr. Price was that day/night when they brought me into the hospital. How very nice he was to me as well as explaining things to them and the care afterwards. The heavens gained a super angel!

Dr. Price was a long time family friend and professional counterpart of my Father. I'd say my these two men knew each (both in central Florida and Cashiers, NC) other about 40+ years before my Dad's passing in 2000. Dr. Price was extremely supportive to our family during my Dad's illness in early 2000 - as my Dad had a long stay in Florida Hospital, Winter Park. Dr. Price appeared daily at the hospital with a smile, to check on all of us, supporting my Dad, my Mother and myself. I cannot express the great comfort we all took in his visits and care during this time. I also knew Dr. Price's lovely wife, Fran... Such a well respected man in his profession and his personal life. I am blessed to have known him and for my family to have him as a long time friend, both professionally and socially. This man was very, very special. I send warm condolences and much peace at this time to the family of this wonderful, dear friend. Roberta Montgomery (daughter of Dr. Robert (Bob) Montgomery)

Dave Price taught me a great lesson about marriage, he said "its a commitment, you hold on to matter what". His words of wisdom have me celebration 12 years a marriage to a wonderful man, his grandson and I have a family beyond my wildest dreams. And to think I could have given up because there was a rough patch.. What a wise man he was, I will miss him and his sweet kiss firmly planted on my cheek.

Dr. Price was one of the kindest and caring people I have ever known. What wisdom, intelligence, and excellence he portrayed! I was honored to have him as a dear, loving, and loyal friend. May God Bless all of the Price family. I have never known anyone like him- and never will.

My mother lived with my family and she had to have emergency surgery. As a family we have planned a weekend runaway.Doctor Price said she was ready to go home. When he found out aabout our plans, he said we will take care of your Mom for the weekend. That would never happen today. I would see him at Publix's and always got a kiss on the cheek. A kind soul.
