David Miller Obituary

Dr. David Miller, age 69, a beloved pediatric surgeon of the Orlando community, passed away suddenly of natural causes in Merritt Island, Florida on Sunday, March 10, 2019 after working all day on his cherished sailboat, Namaste. He was born on August 12, 1949 to Edgar and Mary Julia (Max) Miller in the beautiful mountains of Harlan, Kentucky. Later he moved to Versailles, Kentucky where he graduated from Woodford County High School. After receiving a BS degree from Asbury College, he earned his Medical degree from the University of Louisville School Of Medicine in Louisville, Kentucky. He finished his general surgery residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, which included a one-year exchange residency at Hope Hospital in Manchester, England. He then completed a two-year fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. A member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, he authored articles which were published in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery. Dr. Miller joined the medical staff of Arnold Palmer Hospital in 1993. He faithfully served the children of Central Florida for the next 26 years, where he performed over 12,000 operations, often on the sickest and tiniest of children. During that time he was also an integral part of the academic teaching faculty. David was a mentor, a trusted colleague, and a friend to not only his physician colleague's but also to the hundreds of residents he trained over the years and to the nursing team who supported his work. He was known for his patience and kind teaching approach, his genuine concern, and for his ability to always find time for anyone who needed it. When Arnold Palmer Hospital opened its pediatric emergency department, Dr. Miller worked with his partners to build a program of trauma care surgical services that is now recognized as one of the best in the country. With the opening of the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies, he thrived on the challenge to help create a pediatric surgical service that will benefit the Orlando community for generations to come. He will be remembered for his love, compassion, care and dedication to his patients and for his friendship. He found joy and delight spending time with his wife, Barbara, all his children, grandchildren, and dear friends. He loved the arts, music and literature, soccer, the night sky, and so much more. His thirst for knowledge paired perfectly with his uncanny ability to learn anything that interested him, from sailing to classical guitar. He was an adventurer who felt most at home on the seas aboard his sailboat, Namaste. He was quietly but deeply spiritual and relied on his faith to sustain him through difficult and sad times in his life. Dr. Miller made a difference in this world, and while his legacy will continue, he will be missed deeply. To paraphrase what one of his young friends said about him, "if there were a star for every person, David was the North Star whose light will be carried on through all those who knew and loved him."Dr. Miller is survived by his loving wife Barbara Parkey-Miller, his daughter Rebecca (Ben) Warthen, his son Alec Miller, his stepdaughters Stephanie Lindsay, Jennifer Lindsay, and Rebecca Jane Lindsay (Rob Pennington), his grandchildren, Gabriel, Christopher, Nicholas, Vivienne Rose, Roscoe and Edward, his sister Janis (Wayne) Tolliver, his dear friend Ted Strickland, and special nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his beloved son Colin David and daughter, Chelsea Lauren, his brother "Jim Ed" Miller, special grandmother Sally Eaton Max, and parents Edgar and Mary Julia (Max) Miller.A celebration of Dr. David Miller's life will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at 6:00 PM at the Orlando Museum of Art, 2416 N. Mills Ave, Orlando with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dr. David Miller to the Kentucky United Methodist Children's Homes, 1115 Ashgrove Road, Nicholasville, Kentucky 40356.

Dr. Miller was a kind and caring man. I dated his daughter many years ago. Dr. Miller and his wife were amazing people.

Dr. Miller came into our life when we moved to Central Florida when my son was 5, we spent the following time from 2005 to 2015 seeing him for pectus excavatum, thank God he never needed the surgery. Dr. Miller was amazing with my daughter as well who was with us for every visit, as she loved his jokes and he always let her have a toy out of the toy chest. I'm sorry to hear he passed, grateful to see he was at least enjoying what he loved the most outside of his practice. He will forever be remembered as a gentle and patient soul. God bless you all

I worked in the OR for 10 years and I witnessed what a great surgeon Dr. Miller was and when I had my daughter Collyn in 1996 he came down and removed my infus-a-port while I was under anesthesia and even checked on me later in the evening he was a great surgeon even working on family and friends of mine! My heart goes out to his family and friends! Rest in Peace Dr Miller Thanks for all you did for the children in Orlando!

Our family is deeply saddened to hear of your loss. Doctor Miller performed surgery on our daughter Ivy in 2015 and he was a comfort and joy to our family. We will be eternally grateful for his life and care. May God give your family peace and beautiful memories of such a unique and special man.

Dr. Miller, was such a character as I remember him, with a sense of humor, but also a more serious realism was there when needed.
Dr. Miller was there to help explain and guide us through surgery and interventions, with Dr. Levy and the rest of his team when needed to help save my daughter Meredith.
While I did not know him well, I still vividly remember our exchanges and him taking the time in PICU to draw a very detailed picture of the procedure for our family on the dry erase board.
I also remember his candor when I told him that Dr. Levy and I had discussed a surgical option and he was not aware of and he made me laugh with his honesty and reaction of, "why would we do that?".
Very sad to learn of his passing, but so wonderful to know he was able to spend time doing what he loved, whether working or relaxing.
RIP Dr. Miller

Just now seeing this sad news, but so happy to see that David's life meant so much to so many. I met David in high school - he was exceptional then both academically but more importantly in character. He was the good friend who would help you with a difficult math problem (but never do it for you!) or talk you through a teenage "crisis" with your boyfriend (but never let sympathy keep him from being truthful). He was a hard worker - in the classroom, on the baseball diamond, and in the fields as he helped out a farm friend's family. But what I remember most about David in those days is his kindness, his strength of character and his motivation to make a difference in this world. I lost track of David after he moved to Florida - but it appears that the David I knew went on to make a lasting difference. A life well lived. God Bless his family, friends and patients.

Before our son was born we knew he was going to need a life saving surgery immediately on his intestines. I met Dr. Miller when our son was just minutes old as he was reviewing the xrays and coming up with a plan. That moment was the most scared I've ever been but within just minutes of talking with Dr. Miller I knew our son was in the best hands for his two surgeries. Dr. Miller spoke with you, not at you, and took the time to speak with you, like you were old friends. We had almost daily interactions with Dr. Miller in his last 6 months. I always felt he treated the nurses with respect and again, talked with them and not at them. And likewise the nurses respected him. We have such great respect for Dr. Miller. With our son's most recent stay at APH I thought it was strange that Dr. Miller didn't come to check on our son as I knew he would. That's when we were saddened with the news of his passing. But then again, Dr Miller probably checked on our son from above. Thank you Dr Miller for taking care of Andy. Thoughts go out to his family, he was a great and genuine guy.

Dr. Miller was an Angel on Earth and is an Angel in Heaven. He performed surgery on our daughter (Kristin) at just 5 days old. Our daughter is now 5 years old and thriving. She is in great health. Dr. Miller was a very gentle, caring and loving human being. We saw this in his care for our Kristin. We were up against challenges during her first year of life, but we trusted and knew she was in great hands under God and Dr. Miller's protection. Not only was he a phenomenal doctor, but he was also very funny and down to earth. We loved him so much. We will miss his great stories, jokes and overall optimism regarding circumstances, people and just life. He will be truly missed and never forgotten.

Dr. Miller was not only an educator for me during residency, he became my son's primary surgeon for his dozens of surgeries over the years, even completing a rare cardiac surgery with the cardio thoracic team. I am so grateful for the life he gave me through him pouring into my son and my family as a whole, and all the teaching and examples of great doctoring that I can treasure for my career. Dr. Miller was an exemplary human and will be greatly missed. Condolences to the family.

Dr. Miller has been Tara's surgeon from birth 7/14/03 to the day he passed. He was more than our doctor, he was family and we loved him more than we could possibly describe. He operated on Tara as a brand new preemie at 4lbs7oz, again at 2 months old, then again this past July as well done tons of procedures on her. She's here because of him and every time we saw him, words were never enough to thank him. Besides the amazing doctor that he was, he was also funny, intelligent, musical and loved testing our knowledge of French. His warm smile is embedded in my memory for all time. Today is especially sad because we are saying our last goodbyes to him. Those of you who know of him through Tara, smile because he's affected you too. Au revoir Dr. Miller.

I work with Dr Miller for 18 years at Arnold Palmer Hospital. I can't begin to tell what a great man he was and what a great surgeon. He always made you laugh. He cared about his patients and cared about the staff who took care of his patients. The jokes he would tell me every morning made me laugh. He inspired you to do your best and he was a great teacher. He will be missed. Thank you Dr Miller for all you did. RIP.

Dr. Miller saved my son, Isaiah's life many times. Starting at three days old with his first surgery. Dr. Miller was an excellent surgeon and an even better human being. He would walk us down to our room after each surgery and share music with my husband, who is a musician, in the elevator and in our room. He would take time out of his busy schedule to comfort and encourage us when our son was fighting for his life. Sending much love to his family and a big thank you for sharing him with us all!❤ RIP Dr. Miller You will be missed greatly!

Dr. Miller made a huge difference in my family's life not once but twice. My youngest son was born with a rare tumor that needed surgery to be removed the morning after he was born and Dr. Miller did a beautiful and amazing job on his surgery. A year and a half later that same son needed a heart catheter and Dr.Miller performed that procedure as well. He was genuine in his care for his patients and families and will always be someone special to our family. Our condolences to all who have suffered this loss.

Today, viewing Dr. Miller's obituary contents, there were no surprises of the many and varied contributions he placed on medicine and community. Having met David through his lovely wife, Barbara, he was so welcoming and humble with each visit. It was comforting that he and Barbara were living in Orlando even tho I saw them infrequently. Upon hearing of his passing, many tears have flowed and I am filled with sorrow for each of you. He was so encouraging and kind in spite of our different life occupation. I will thank God each time I remember him and his sweet smile. Although this grief will linger, may I carry forward gratitude in knowing David.
