Robert A. Callahan, known affectionately as Bob, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2024, at Syracuse Home in Baldwinsville. He was born on November 19, 1945, in Syracuse to the late Muriel (Smith) Wright. Bob was raised North of Syracuse and was a 1963 graduate of Central Tech High School. Following graduation, Bob served his country during the Vietnam War in the US Navy. Bob worked as a senior integration engineer for NY Telephone, AT&T, and Avaya, and later in his career with MacSource. His dedication and expertise made a lasting impact in the field until his retirement in 2012.
He had a wide range of interests that brought joy to his life. He was an avid HAM radio operator with the call sign WB2TAD, connecting with fellow enthusiasts around the world. Bob’s love for radio extended to his involvement with the Syracuse Microd and Quarter Midget Club, where he was an active member. Bob also dedicated himself to various community organizations. He was a past President of the Syracuse Pistol Club for many years and a member of the Fulton Rod & Gun Club. One of Bob’s greatest pleasures was indulging his lifelong love for auto racing. Whether it be cheering on drivers at Oswego Speedway or participating in RC Car racing at Walt’s Hobby Shop in Lakeland after retirement, he found pure bliss in every race he witnessed and took part in.
His family meant the world to him. Bob shared more than 50 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Zella C. (Pepperman) who passed away in 2020. He is survived by his two daughters, Susan Callahan of Clay and Diane Swind of Temple, Texas; a grandson, Devin Swind and great-grandson, Matthew Swind, both of Temple, Texas.
