I worked with Lt. Osteen when I was a rookie firefighter with OFD. There were always some Lts. who stood out from the others and John was that kind of officer. He led his guys into battle and they did their best for him....not because they had to but because they wanted to. You knew if Lt. Osteen was on your rig and called for "two boosters!" on a housefire that you could damn well put it out with two boosters...nothing else was needed. He was a firefighter's firefighter who cut a path for the rest of us to follow. He was the kind of officer I decided to model myself after and hopefully, the kind I became.

I thank God that I was priviliged to work with him and know him before he retired. I am a better man for having known him.

During my five years with the Orlando Fire Department I found in Johnny a friend. He was always willing to share his knowledge and had a true love of firefighting. He will be missed.
