Jon Straube Obituary

Straube, Jon PeteOn Fri, Dec 6, 2013, Jon Peter Straube's long battle with cancer came to an end. Pete was a kind, gentle man who delighted all who knew him with his humor & integrity. Born April 19, 1945 to Edward & Martha Straube, Pete dedicated his life to children. He graduated from Boonton HS in NJ, Emory Univ (BA) & Stetson Univ (MA). He married his college sweetheart Nancy Hodges in 1968 and raised their 3 children in DeLand, FL until Nancy's death in 1991. While teaching, he found love again and married Mary Ann Tartaglia; they started a new life in Winter Park. He taught for 40 years at DeLand HS, Deltona HS, & Sweetwater Episcopal Academy, and served as president of the Volusia Educators Assoc. Pete loved his school kids & sponsored a reading contest where he shaved his head & let the kids sign it. He was an avid sports fan who loved golf, played & coached tennis & basketball; a movie buff who created the Funky Films Festival. He enjoyed old time rock & roll, never refusing a bowl of ice cream. Pete believed in democracy, registering voters even while battling cancer. He leaves his wife Mary Ann; children Kathy (Roy) Ducker, Jill (Brian) Speiser, & Jeff (Pascaline) Straube; brother Paul (Cyndy); niece Elizabeth; grandchildren, Evan, Isabelle, Carl, Samantha, Lauren & Lindsey. Service will be Saturday, Dec 14 at 2:00 at Episcopal Church of the Resurrection 251 E Lake Brantley Dr, Longwood, FL. Donations may be made to Give Kids the World, www.gktw.org, and www.HospiceOfTheComforter.org.

Mr. Straube was my 1st period film studies teacher in 1980-81 the year that I graduated. He was a really cool teacher. We watched many black and white films such as Casablanca then he had us break them down to their essence which gave us insight and appreciation. We were separated into groups and each group had to make a short film. Then those films were shown in the auditorium to the rest of the school under the name Funky Films. I wish I had a copy of that film we made to show my children what I looked like at 18 years old on film lol.

Dad,

I can't believe it has already been a year since you left us. I miss you dearly but get the chance to witness your spirit, wisdom and sense of humor reflected from kids every day. Your presence lives on.

Love always,
your son

Mr. Straube was my film studies teacher in high school and to this day I not only remember his words, thoughts, voice and laughter, but also the movies he loved to talk about and share with us in class. I often still refer to the things he taught us to appreciate and notice, in films as well as in life. He touched many lives in many positive ways and shall be missed and remembered. My sympathies to his loved ones who knew him best and will grieve the most.

Pete was a lovely man. His was the first wedding I ever attended: he and Nancy Hodges married in a lovely ceremony at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in DeLand. I had occasion to meet him several times since over the past 46 years, and I was always impressed by his kindness.

Rest in peace, good man.

Mary Ann, my sincere condolences to you and his children. Pete will always be in the hearts of those who worked with him at DHS. He added warmth and wit and was always there to help out a stressed out teacher, esp this one.
