Joseph Weckerle Obituary

WECKERLE, JR., JOSEPH A., Former Executive Director of the Heart of Florida United Way died after a brief illness at his home in Maitland. He was with family and assisted by
VITAS. Joseph is survived by his loving wife and companion of 23 years, Lilia, his sons, Marty and Joe, their wives,
Suzann and Jane and grandchildren, Joe, Michael, Dylan, Kate and Sara and his loving stepdaughters, Jocelyn Nitsch, Melissa Shrenk, Kim Werner, and Heather Michalak. Mr. Weckerle was born May 28, 1923 in Dayton, Ohio, son of Joseph, Sr. and Bertha Weckerle. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the US Army Air Corps. He attended The Miami University located in Oxford, Ohio. Later he embarked on a successful career as a radio sportscaster, broadcasting football and basketball for WMOH, Hamilton and WIZE Springfield Ohio. For ten seasons, Mr. Weckerle was the voice of Springfield's Wittenberg University Tigers. After a successful career change, he headed the Clark County, Ohio United Way before moving to Orlando in 1968 to work for the Orange County United Way, which he also later headed until he retired in 1988. An avid sports fan and world traveler, Mr. Weckerle was known for his quick wit, sense of humor and ability to problem solve. Donations to Vitas or Cancer research will be greatly appreciated. Service to be held later in Ohio.
