Katherine Hummel Obituary
Kathy was born in Pittsburg, PA to Aldo and Eleanor Icardi on December 31, 1946. She grew up in a large, close-knit Irish and Italian family. Kathy enjoyed a life and career dedicated to the service of others. After graduating from Mercyhurst University with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, she moved with her family to Orlando. Kathy obtained a Masters in Social Work from Florida State University while embarking on a long career as an integral part of BETA, a non-profit sanctuary for unwed teen mothers in Orlando. Her role as Counselor allowed her to touch the lives of countless young women in the Orlando area. Also, Kathy provided her services to the Orlando VA, counseling many veterans over the years. This theme of care and compassion for those in need continued throughout the rest of her life.
Kathy then moved to Birmingham, Alabama to pursue her greatest joy, her family. Kathy was an involved and loving mother and grandmother. The wisdom and values that she imparted to her children will remain long after her passing. Her energy, enthusiasm, humor, and style leave her family and friends with many fond memories.
Kathy was preceded in death by her mother Ellie, her father Aldo, and a dear nephew Elliott Icardi. She will be forever cherished by her husband Michael; sons Curt and wife Kelley, Christopher and wife Kim, and Gordon and wife Rachel; grandchildren Ashley (Matt), Chase, Mac, Natalie, Carter, Grace, Max, Eleanor, and Ava Katherine; her brothers and sister, Larry (Kay), Chris (Judy), Patrice and Jeff (Helen); as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Kathy's life will be held at Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover, Alabama on Saturday, September 28th at 11 am. The family will receive guests at a reception following in the church fellowship hall.

Mike--So sorry to hear. Reading of Kathy brings to mind those fun days long ago--attending the "Palmer Powerhouse" games with Paul Laporati, Curt, Matt, you. This was an important chapter in the lives of our sons. Glad to hear you are still in area--we live in Winter Park and do OK for old folks!
