Mark Calvin Huaman was born in Atlanta, GA on May 7, 1963, and passed away on August 20, 2021 at Central Florida Regional Hospital, Sanford from complications due to COVID and diabetes.
Huaman graduated from Bishop Moore High School in 1981, where he was a member of the wrestling and baseball teams. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1988 with a BA in Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Business Administration. While at Florida, Mark was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, where he served as president of the Gamma Xi chapter. He graduated with a Masters in Education from Rollins College in 1994.
Mark Huaman was a 25 year Seminole County teacher, who taught honors English at Winter Springs High School. Male English teachers are rare, but Mark's passion for teaching the classics, and inspiring his students to love reading and writing are what made him an exceptional teacher. After spending the 2020-21 school year as a virtual instructor, Mark was thrilled to go back into the classroom to teach his students.
Huaman was also softball coach at WSHS, and had been a part of the program since its inception. He was instrumental in making it the state powerhouse that it is today. Upon his retirement from coaching, he amassed an unprecedented 402 and 161 record while capturing: 6 Seminole Athletic Conference titles, 10 FHSAA District titles, 3 FHSAA Region titles, 2 FHSAA State Finals 1 State Title, and the 2019 National Championship after a perfect 31-0 season. Coach Huaman was named the 2019 National Coach of the year, and was inducted into the WSHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.
Mark is survived by his three daughters, Emma, Lexi, and Scarlett of Winter Springs, FL. They were the lights of his life. His parents, Dr. Gonzalo and Shirley Huaman of Sanford FL; brother, Dr. Kevin Huaman (Shannon), Middleburg, FL; sisters: Susana Dragosavac (Irving), Lake Mary, FL; Alicia Lulley (Patick) Long Island, N.Y.; and 10 nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 5, at the auditorium at Winter Springs High School, 130 Tuskawilla Road, Winter Springs. Visitation with the family will be from 1 to 2 pm. Service will begin at 2 pm. The family is requesting that bright clothes be worn to the celebration as Mark would not have wanted a somber occasion.
