Martin Schatz Obituary

Martin Schatz, of Bluffton, SC, age 84, passed away on April 28, 2021. Marty was born on August 1, 1936 in The Bronx, NY to Murray and Florence (Hollander) Schatz and older sister Marion. Marty graduated from the University of Alabama School of Engineering in 1959. Marty earned an MBA in 1965 from the University of Florida School of Business. Marty then returned to New York City and earned a PhD in Management from NYU's Graduate School of Business in 1972.

Marty met Harriet Marsha (Cohen) Schatz at a club in NYC and they married on June 26, 1970 at City Hall. This past year Marty & Harriet celebrated 50 years of marriage. With Harriet at his side, Marty spent 21 years on the picturesque Rollins College campus. Marty (Dean Emeritus and Professor of Management) led the Crummer Graduate School of Business to become accredited and ranked as the #1 Graduate Business School in the South.

Marty is survived by his loving wife Harriet, his daughters Karen and Lauren, along with his son-in-law Evan and two grandsons Ezekiel and Emmitt. Marty was a man of integrity and the positive impact he had on those that knew him will be his legacy.

God Bless Dr. Martin Schatz who smiled with love in his eyes for 21 years on the Rollins College campus! Marty always had time for me. And everyone else, too. Sadly, Dr. Charles A. Welsh, founding Crummer Dean, who took a chance on me,
never lived to experience that
thunderclap on the Rollins campus that signaled Marty's
coup in landing an AACSB
accreditation for Rollins'
Crummer Graduate School of
Business along with a small handful of business schools nationwide. Including Harvard
and Chicago. In Elizabeth Fowler's June 19, 1990 New York Times article, "Careers; Rethinking Business Education,"
Crummer's Dean Schatz was quoted as follows.."The difference between a teaching faculty and a research faculty is in what the faculty publishes. We encourage our people to publish material that improves the teaching process. Unlike many other schools, we value the publication of textbooks."
True story: After graduating from Crummer in 1978, I visited
the Stanford University campus,
wandered into an empty Stanford Business School classroom, and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a single
Finance text on a desk...the exact same Finance text I'd
studied in Professor A. Ross Evans' class at Crummer!

With God's Richest Blessings
to Marty and family,
