Mary Tharnstrom Obituary

Tharnstrom, Mary Mary Ann Tharnstrom, 91, resident of John Knox Village, Orange City, FL, passed away Friday, April 11th. Mary Ann was born on October 8th, 1922 in Clinton, Minnesota, the 11th of 12 children, to the late George Steen and Helga (Scholberg) Steen. Following graduation from Clinton High School, she received her teaching certificate and taught at a local school for 2 years. During her youth in Clinton, she and her younger sister Helen were a popular singing duo at local events. Following the death of her parents in 1941, she moved to Chicago where she lived with 3 older siblings and worked as an executive assistant until she met and married her husband, Clarence Tharnstrom in 1950. In 1955, she and her husband moved to Deerfield, Ill where they resided for 25 years and raised their son Charles. Mary Ann was a loving mother, an active school volunteer and a leader in the Deerfield PTA. Mary Ann and Clarence retired to Palm Coast Fl in 1980 where they enjoyed an active lifestyle. Widowed in 1983, Mary Ann remained an engaged member of the community, embraced golf, and was a proud member of the Palm Harbor 'Nifty Niners', often shooting her age (for 9 holes)! In 2007, she and her older sister moved together to John Knox Village. She is survived by her son and his wife, Charles Tharnstrom and Denise McCain-Tharnstrom; her grandson, Blaine Tharnstrom; her two granddaughters Devyn and Brenna Tharnstrom and her loving sister Lucille Larson. Funeral services will be held at Deltona Memorial Funeral Home Orange City, 386-775-4260 on Tuesday April 15th at 10:30A.M.

I was one of the home health aides that took care of Mrs. Tharnstrom. She was always a sweet lady to me. Always had a hug and kiss. I took her and her sister Lucille to vespers a lot of Sunday nights. After the service I would fix hot chocolate and cinnamon toast with strawberry jam for the ladies. They loved the treat and I enjoyed fixing it for them. I loved how her face always lit up talking of her son Charles. He was the sunshine of her life. God's Blessing to all the family at this time of your loss of a loved one.

We are extremely sad to hear of Mary Ann's passing. We will always remember the good times we had with her. Both with mom and dad and with our family when we visited Florida. We are praying for your family at this time and know you will always have good memories also.
