From Emily Dickinson,
" Each that we lose takes part of us;
A crescent still abides,
Which like the moon, some turbid night,
Is summoned by the tides."

On this anniversary of loss, the author Kathryn Schulz offers the origin of the word as in fact an apt analogue for the experience of loss:

"The verb "to lose" has its taproot sunk in sorrow; it is related to the "lorn" in "forlorn." It comes from an Old English word meaning to perish, which comes from an even older word meaning to separate or cut apart. The modern sense of misplacing an object only appeared later, in the thirteenth century; a hundred years after that, "to lose" acquired the meaning of failing to win. In the sixteenth century we began to lose our minds; in the seventeenth century, our hearts. The circle of what we can lose, in other words, began with our own lives and each other and has been steadily expanding ever since. This is how loss felt to me after my father died: like a force that constantly increased its reach, gradually encroaching on more and more terrain." From her book, Lost & Found (public library)

Losing someone is the hardest thing to accept. Remembering you is easy, I do it everyday.
Missing you is the heartache, that never goes away.

Seeing your light shining through the eyes of the children you have left behind is a gift I will cherish all my life.

Dear Susan and Family,

I have been thinking of you and your sister and all of your families. I remember Matthew, and I truly enjoyed reading about him in the write-up that George sent. I appreciate very much the efforts on your and your sister’s parts to help others and to honor Matthew. I love the ways you and George always find to participate, whether you are physically there or not.

My thoughts and prayers continue to be with all of you.
Grace and Peace,

Audrey and John W.

Matt, You are in the everlasting arms of our mom and dad now. I know you are at peace but it still doesn't take my pain away. You will allways be with me, I will always love you and never forget you. I will always remember the Oreo cookie snow fights you won!

And I will always love you, my sweet loving and caring brother who no matter what I did or said always stood by me and loved me anyway.

To Holly: i will always be there for you as a sister.

Death, be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so; For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me. From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be, Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow, And soonest our best men with thee do go, Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery. Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men, And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell, And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then? One short sleep past, we wake eternally And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die. By John Donne
