Robert Picerne Obituary

Robert "Bob" Picerne lived and loved big. He loved his family; he loved his friends and he embraced adventure with all its risks. When his life ended suddenly, it left a wake of grief for all who loved him back.

Originally from Rhode Island, Bob displayed early on a natural affinity for entrepreneurship when at age 16 he started his own home painting business. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and ultimately earned a bachelor's degree in Organizational Behavior from Brown University. His degree proved helpful in the real world where he and his former wife, Gwyn, adopted 16 children to join the two they already had. The couple were married 26 years and ultimately formed an adoption agency.

Bob served in the business started by his family in 1925 – Picerne Development, one of the nation's leading commercial development companies. He also owned a wide variety of business ventures. In business, his ability to connect with others served him well. But even more important to Bob was connecting with and nurturing his children, all of whom remember their father as caring, fun-loving and a champion of their bringing home good grades. He was a hands-on dad. Daughters Bridget and Hannah recall when their beloved dad cared for them on days when they were sick and stayed home from school. "I'm going to miss every time I was sick and he took care of me even if he was busy and just wanted me to feel better," recalled Hannah.

Collectively, Bob's children carry memories of a father who was present. Daughter Alexandria says her father, "…understood me when nobody did." The siblings' shared recollections include jet skiing with their father, working on cars together, watching movies, learning how to drive a boat, snow skiing, cooking and most importantly, just talking and spending time with him. He collected cars and historic bibles. He believed so strongly in education that one of his biggest thrills in life was to receive an honorary doctorate from Livingstone College, a historical black college in North Carolina.

Son, Chase, characterized his father as Superman. "The only difference is that for him, he needed a plane to fly." And Bob did fly; he owned his own Cessna and frequently took friends and kids with him in his travels. Meanwhile, his posse of buddies, some of whom he met on the ice rink at RDV Sports for pick up hockey games, remember Bob's love of sports, specifically hockey.

As generously as he loved at home, he loved equally as large socially. Successful in business, Bob had the ability to help others as he saw fit. He defined philanthropy by giving generously, broadly, and most of all quietly. His greatest joy was giving anonymously to individuals and organizations, and the breadth of his contributions to those in need was profound. If he saw a need, he wasn't shy about asking his friends to step up join him to make a positive difference. Bob's attitude was always that everything would be fine.

Family was everything to Bob. Son Martin said his father gave him the greatest gift that can't be repaid, "a family." Daughter Chandler said what she will miss greatly is hearing Bob sing at the top of his lungs "What A Wonderful World"; a wonderful world is what Bob Picerne created for family and friends. He is sorely missed.

Mr. Picerne is survived by his children Davey Welch, Andrei Picerne, Lida Picerne, Martin Picerne, Chandler Stephens, Chase Picerne, Violet Picerne, Kryique Picerne, Natalie Picerne, Ezra Picerne, Ally Picerne, Hannah, Picerne, Bridget Picerne, Ezekiel Picerne, Aiden Picerne, and Angie Picerne; grandchildren Layla and Daxton Fike; father Ron Picerne; siblings David Picerne, Donna Picerne Uritescu, Jeanne Picerne, Ken Picerne, John Picerne; wife Josephina Noelle Picerne.

A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, January 10 at First Baptist Church Orlando.

I'm so, so, sorry to just now learn of Bob's passing. He was such an amazing man, father, and brother in Christ. I know that he and my late husband Lloyd are rejoicing in heaven. I only knew him for a few years, but he and Gwyn both did so much for my husband when he was in seminary, and just getting started in ministry, and also for my family. I know he will be missed by all who knew him.

To the Picerne Family,

It was my pleasure to serve Bob and his friends at his favorite sushi bar. I served him sushi for only three and a half years, at my tenure at this restaurant, and understand why there is a sushi roll on the menu named after him. Bob often talked about family, and when I seen him and his family on the front page of the Orlando Sentinel, I truly learned the meaning of "FAMILY." Bob, Thank You for allowing me to serve you!

What a fine example of a life well lived! I never had the honor and privilege of knowing this wonderful man personally, but from reading his obituary, I can see that he truly reflected God's love and light in all he did. May we all be encouraged, empowered, and inspired by Robert's humility, generosity and love. The world is a better place because he was in it, and may his memory be eternal. God Bless.

To the entire Picerne Family:

Nancy and I offer our most sincere condolences on Bob's passing.

I had the pleasure of attending Moses Brown with Bob and his brothers. In fact, we car pooled for several years. Of course, Bob was active in MB hockey and made a name for himself in the school's annals. As life went on we lost track of each other. Reading his obituary revealed that there was quite a lot more to Bob than hockey.

Raising a family of such an impressive size, providing support to those who need it most, volunteering, establishing successful business, catering to lower-income folks and more paint a picture of a truly selfless individual.

While taken far too soon, we hope your pleasant memories of Bob provide you comfort in the days ahead, and additional focus on what is really important in life.

Anyone who had the privilege to know Robert was forever changed. He was the voice of reason, had a generous heart, and admired by many. Robert stood by the community and gave his all when set to a task. Strong willed he could accomplish all he set his mind to. He was one of the kindest people I have had the honor to know and spend time with. Thank you for all you have done here in this lifetime. Holding you and your family close in thought and praying those memories will bring peace and lift a heavy heart.

Bob Picerne was a kind and generous man with a great passion for studying and collecting God's Word. We met at one of Dr. R.C. Sproul's Ligonier Ministries conferences in Orlando, and we had a number of friends in common.
As Director of The Bible Museum (greatsite.com), I was privileged to know Bob, and to assist him over a period of several years in building one the world's top collections of rare and antique Bibles, which he cherished and kept in his home.
The world has lost one of the most unique and sincere Christian men that I have ever known, and though his life was tragically cut short, Bob has unquestionably left the world a better place due to his influence and his actions. I am so very thankful to have known Bob.

We are so sad to hear about Bob's passing. Thinking a lot about Gwyn & the precious kids. We love each & every one & have been praying for yall. Bob was a good friend. Bob was kind, generous, a loving dad, good cook...We miss him. He was also a key player for Orphans First, helping our children's homes & programs in diverse ways (orphansfirst.org) -- he & Gwyn. I met Bob many years ago at my family's salon in Sanford. From day one Bob was super kind and so patient with his family all enjoying a spa day together. He was funny, charismatic, and most of all, kind hearted. He was such a loyal client and always took care of us whenever he could in any way possible. Generous and such a kindred soul that offered a listening ear to help with problems. We will truly miss him and will never forget him and his contagious smile.
