William P. "Bud" Layer

William Layer Obituary

LAYER, WILLIAM P. "BUD", 76, former superintendent of Seminole County Public Schools died on Friday, December 5, 2003 after a three-year battle with lung cancer. He was a 48-year resident of Sanford. Bud was born December 2, 1927 in Cincinnati, OH and spent his childhood in LaGrange, KY. He graduated from Hanover College in Indiana in 1949. Bud served in the Coast Guard as a lieutenant j.g. during the Korean conflict. He earned a masters degree in educational administration at Stetson University. In 1955 Bud came to Seminole County, taught biology, and was the head basketball coach at Seminole High. He was president of the Seminole Education Association before becoming an assistant principal at Lyman High School. He also served as principal of Milwee Middle, Teague Middle, and Seminole High. Bud was elected to two terms as superintendent of the Seminole County Public Schools, serving from 1972 to 1981. He received many civic and educational awards including the Rotary Club's Paul Harris Fellow and the 1999 Topper Award from the Sanford/Seminole Chamber of Commerce. The William P. "Bud" Layer Scholarship Fund, administered by the Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools was established in 2002. Most recently, the Seminole County School Board voted to name the new Winter Springs elementary school opening in August 2004 Layer Elementary School, in honor of Bud and his wife Lucy. He was a member of Markham Woods Presbyterian Church and an elder of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. Bud's hobbies were golfing, fishing and traveling. He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Lucy Piloian Layer, and by his loving daughter, Laura Lynn. He is also survived by his brother Richard Layer and sister-in-law Barbara of Tallahassee; brothers-in-law and sisters-in- law John and Carlene Piloian and Billy and Gladys Piloian all of Longwood; and 14 nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 14 at 2PM at Markham Woods Presbyterian Church in Lake Mary. A reception will be held following the service at the church.
