Alfred Hanus Obituary

Alfred Hanus
Alfred Anthony Hanus, 84, passed peacefully on Sunday, November 23, 2025 after a battle with stomach cancer.
Born in Heilbronn, Germany on October 23, 1941, Al emigrated with his family to Cleveland Ohio in 1956. Four years later, he graduated valedictorian of his high school and went on to study chemical engineering at Case Institute of Technology, Class of 1964. He met, charmed and married Mary Ann Brunetz, the love of his life for over 60 years, and they headed to Midland to build a life together.
Al proudly spent his entire working life with The Dow Chemical Company, where his 36-year career culminated in his leadership of a major environmental project to help privatize the chemical industry in former east Germany. Proud of his US citizenship, he always held his home country dear to his heart as well, where he and Mary Ann lived three different times while he completed Dow overseas assignments. Enjoying a good German beer, and conversation with family and friends made for a perfect day.
He was an adventurous traveler and had the good fortune of visiting all seven continents. He was a fierce competitor in table tennis, a soccer player, coach & referee, a casual golfer, and a fitness guru before it was a "thing". Al was a nature and wildlife lover, and a huge supporter of the National Parks. Al enjoyed Higgins Lake and Mackinac Island with his family often. He also followed every sport imaginable. He knew all the athletes and scores of every sport and game, every season.
Aside from his interests, Al forged and valued his many friendships that span the globe. He cherished his family, friends, neighbors and community. In Midland, Al leaves a legacy of bringing joy and helping people less fortunate. He was amazingly generous with so many, in countless ways. He was one of the founders of the Midland Soccer Club, served as President of the Michigan Soccer Officials Association, devoted years as a dedicated cancer care volunteer, and was a staunch supporter of Midland's Cancer Services and Shelter House, among other organizations helping those in need.
Above all else, Al beamed in his role as husband, father and grandfather. He was his family's guiding light, cheering on his children and grandchildren with heartfelt love and enthusiasm, and in recent years dedicated his days to caring for his wife who battles Alzheimer's. He adored and cherished time with family, never happier than when they were all together, especially over the holidays.
He leaves behind a loving family to cherish his memory. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, his daughter Michelle Cooney (Bob), his son Kurt Hanus (Lisa), five grandchildren Meredith, Catherine, Amanda, Logan and Ava, and his youngest sister, Theresa Mosley. He is predeceased by his siblings Rudolf Hanus, Emilie Urban, Stefan Hanus, and Norbert Hanus.
The family plans to hold a small private memorial service at a later date. Donations in his name would be so appreciated and may be sent to Cancer Services in Midland at 4201 Campus Ridge Drive, Midland, MI 48670.
