Ann Dickey Obituary

Ann Kutz Dickey, age 99, passed away on November 19, 2025 in Reston, Virginia.
Ann was born on September 30, 1926 in Duluth, MN, the daughter of Karl and Leona Kutz. She was an only child. The family moved frequently; she lived in Duluth and Minneapolis, MN, Dallas and Fort Worth, TX, Kansas City, MO, and Pontiac, MI. She attended the University of Michigan, graduating in 1947.
In 1948 Ann married Clayton Dickey of Milwaukee, WI, who she met when both were night editors at the University of Michigan student newspaper. They were married for 65 years. In 1949 they moved to Paris France for 15 months where Ann worked at the American embassy. They moved from Milwaukee to Midland, MI in 1955 and maintained a home in Midland for 56 years.
When her two children were young, Ann helped to organize the Chippewa Cooperative Nursery in Midland, which still operates as Chippewa Cooperative Preschool. She also advocated for the teaching of foreign languages in elementary school and worked to raise money to help finance such a program in Midland, which offered French lessons for three years until deemed too expensive.
In 1964 Ann began working at newly formed Saginaw Valley College, later Saginaw Valley State University. She served for 25 years, holding positions as Registrar, Dean for Student Services, and Director of Institutional Research and Planning. Along the way, Ann returned to the University of Michigan to earn a Masters Degree in Political Science in 1967 and a Ph.D. in Higher Education in 1979.
Following her retirement, Ann and Clayton spent their winters in Tucson, AZ and their summers in Midland. After Clayton died, Ann moved to Omaha, NE in 2014 and then to Reston in 2021 to be near family.
Ann enjoyed reading, book clubs, gourmet cooking, travel, bridge, continuing education, and the arts.
Ann is survived by daughter Liz Dickey of Eugene, OR, son David Dickey of Reston, daughter-in-law Carol Dickey, and grandchildren Jennifer and Kevin Dickey.
Those who would like to make a memorial gift may wish to consider the University of Michigan or Saginaw Valley State University.
