Frank Altimore Obituary

Frank Altimore
Frank Altimore, 81, of Midland, passed away on July 29 at home, with his family at his side, following declining health. He was born on July 10, 1944 in Johnstown, PA and grew up in Pittsburgh. He was the oldest of three sons born to William and Pauline Altimore. Frank attended Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School, where he was an all-state running back.
Frank was recruited by Coach Duffy Dougherty to attend Michigan State, as a running back and a highlight of his college years was MSU's 1966 Rose Bowl, following their 1965 National Championship season. Upon completion of his master's degree in 1967, he began a long teaching and coaching career with the Midland Public Schools. Frank first taught Social Studies and coached baseball at Midland High, winning two state championships in 1973 and 1982, and was named Michigan's baseball Coach of the Year in 1973. Frank was also an assistant football coach at Midland High for 16 years.
In 1983, he became the head football coach at Dow High School, a position he held for the next 20 years. In 1997, his Dow High football team made it to the MHSAA State Finals at the Silverdome. Earlier that year, Frank also began coaching Dow's Girls' Golf Team, winning numerous Saginaw Valley League championships.
Frank retired from teaching in 2003. Throughout his career, he was inducted into the Michigan H.S. Coaches Hall of Fame, Michigan H.S. Football Coaches Hall of Fame, Midland County Hall of Fame, Midland High Hall of Fame, and Dow High Hall of Fame. In 2024 Frank and his MSU teammates were inducted into the Michigan State University Hall of Fame for winning back-to-back national championships in 1965 and 1966.
One of his most meaningful teaching experiences was to be part of a Humanities team at Dow that taught American history, art, music, and literature in a two-hour block. The four participating teachers learned from each other, and the integrated approach was popular with students.
In retirement, Frank coached young golfers in a summer program sponsored by Currie Golf Course, and Frank and Connie enjoyed spending their winter months in Port St. Lucie, FL.
Frank was always proud of being from Western Pennsylvania and of his Italian heritage. When not teaching or coaching, he could often be found in the kitchen, making homemade pasta sauce, tweaking recipes, and preparing large-scale dishes because of his family's restaurant background. He made sure to leave both sons a collection of their favorite recipes.
As a former player and coach, Frank loved the sports world and enjoyed watching games in retirement – especially football, baseball, and golf –and stayed loyal to his native Steelers, his hometown Tigers, and his fellow Spartans.
Frank was grateful for the opportunity to spend his adult life and career in Midland and appreciated the opportunity to work with so many wonderful colleagues, students, and athletes from his Charger and Chemic teams. He valued his fellow Saginaw Valley League coaches as both competitors and good friends. More than anything, Frank loved his immediate and extended family.
Frank is survived by his wife of 52 years, Connie Collins Altimore; his two sons, Tony Altimore, of Port St. Lucie, FL, and Greg Altimore (Melinda) of Brighton, MI; and brothers, Bill Altimore (Patty) of Lansing, MI, and Rick Altimore (Nancy) of Sunrise, FL. Frank will also be dearly missed by brother-in-law, Terry Collins (Debbie); sisters-in-law, Peggy Titsworth (Chuck), and Sheri Prince (Dan); as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place, and a private memorial service for family will be held at a future date. In Frank's memory, consider a donation to the Dow High or Midland High sports boosters' clubs. End of life arrangements are with Ware-Smith Woolever (wswfh.com), where one can leave condolences or share a memory.

Frank and I were freshman football recruits at MSU in 1962. I was from Canton, Ohio, not to far from Frank´s Pittsburgh. We connected and were friends and roommates in one form or another until 1966.
It seemed as if our competitive spirit was immediately at play as we both liked cards...specifically Crazy 8´s. Hours were lost in chasing the dream of being the best. We created a document declaring "that to be the case," but only the name of the champion would be on the document. I wouldn´t be telling the story if Frank was the winner. I kept the document with my name on it and still have it. Over the years I would just happen to have it if I was going to see Frank on campus. Our friendship lasted a lifetime.

I was a teammate of Frank´s at Central Catholic. He was a funny guy, but tough as nails. Nobody messed with him on the field. I´m sorry to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family.

I enjoyed Frank´s company, especially on the golf course. Bantering was a highlight with the competition. Enjoy the Great Fairway in the sky Frank. Your putt breaks right.

It was in the Fall of 1968 my senior year at Midland High School when my best friend Don Griffin and I met an energetic young football coach fresh out of MSU who had been on the great MSU teams of 1965 and 1966 and was now coaching us at Midland High. That year was exciting for Midland football as we won the State title that Fall. Coach Altimore was a big part of our success. We were inspired by Coach Altimore´s stories of football at MSU and college life. In fact his stories were a large part of why Don and I chose MSU over Notre Dame and UM for college. His wife Connie was a cheerleader and our Homecoming Queen. It was a magical senior year at MHS and Coach Altimore´s youthful energy was a big part of it for me. A year later my family and Don Griffin´s family moved to Pittsburgh and this brought about more stories about Frank´s Pittsburgh days and our families became Steelers fans and kept us in contact for years thereafter. My condolences to the family and especially his wife Connie. Frank was a great guy and an inspiration to me.

Always enjoyed our games vs Coach Altimore´s teams. Had his kids always ready to play. Great advocate for not only Midland Dow but the Saginaw Valley League. I enjoyed watching games with him during our post retirement. We shared so many great memories of not only the great games we played against each other. But also all the great athletes and coaches we faced in the Valley. Coach Altimore was one of the great ones. World´s a better place because of him.

We met Frank over 60 years ago when we were both freshman football players @ Michigan State. It was an exiting time for our "Ban of Brothers". As we plowed through football, school work and a world too complicated for most of us to understand. Our career paths were in Midland and we feel most fortunate our two sons were part of Frank's Dow High football success. They learned & grew under Coach Altimore's leadership. We are grateful for Frank's friendship and will miss him dearly. Please give Connie, their Boys and the family our Condolences. Steve and Linda Juday families!

Connie,
My many memories of Frank go back a lot of years. Spending a weekend at his Mom's house with Speedy and Frank is the best. When he made homemade lasagna for Speedy, John Karpinski, and the Scofes's is another. God bless you and your extended family.

All our love,
Ed and Brenda

Carole and I shared a life-long friendship with Frank. The MSU football and dormitory bond was special. Moving to Cedar Arms allowed us to enjoy his cooking and continue our friendship. While the Crazy-8 champion was in dispute the competition was always fun. Friends forever!

My Sympathy to all. Frank was a great friend to my uncle Dick Page. They had football and other high school sports coaching in common. They had many adventures together such as playing golf together they were known as the Fleece Brothers. My uncle was quite a bit older than Frank and they did not appear as much of a threat to other golf teams and were able to win a lot of friendly bets. Frank told us this at my uncle´s burial. He sat with my sister and I when Uncle Dick was in the hospital just before his death. I was going to try to visit him tomorrow after too many years and found I had just missed him. My heart is with you all at the passing of this great friend.
With Love, Wendy Page-Echols

Mrs. Altimore, Tony, Greg and Family:
I am sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Altimore. He could cook some mean Italian food and always had that smile on his face. May the many memories carry you through this difficult time. Sending you all hugs.

I had the honor of playing Legion baseball for Coach Altimore. He was competitive, but compassionate.
He made everyone feel like family.

To the family, so sorry for your loss. Coach had such a positive impact on so many, myself included. What an honor to have him as a teacher and years later to be a colleague. Family was vitally important to Coach, and I admired this man who stood so tall among men who reserved his deepest love for his wife and children. Thanks, Frank, you were giving of your time and care for a young man, teacher, and fellow coach.
