Gary Smith Obituary
Gary Stephen Smith, M.D.
Dr. Gary Stephen Smith, age 76, passed away on October 31, 2025, in East Lansing, Michigan, surrounded by his loving family. He was welcomed into eternity by his cherished son, Andrew.
Born on August 23, 1949, in Huntington, West Virginia, Gary was the son of Deanie Smith and Vaught "Doc" Smith and grew up in Gallipolis, Ohio. His early years were marked by a love of school, sports, and leadership - qualities that would define his life.
Gary met the love of his life, Sandy, in 1967 at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Their bond grew strong through shared dreams and unwavering support for one another. Gary graduated from The Ohio State University in 1971 where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He then pursued his dream of medicine at the Medical College of Ohio, graduating as a Doctor of Medicine in 1974. Gary began his medical career with a family practice residency in Midland, MI, where he and Sandy lived for 44 years while raising their family.
For 35 years, Dr. Gary Smith served as a dedicated family physician in Midland. His commitment to caring for others extended across generations - from delivering newborns to providing compassionate care in nursing homes. Known for his steady presence and kind heart, he became a trusted figure in countless Mid-Michigan households. Beyond his medical practice, Gary also contributed to the community through service on the Chemical Bank Community Board of Directors for 29 years, membership at First United Methodist Church and by volunteering in various projects at Lake Louise Christian Community.
Gary, "Big G's" life was rich with passions that brought him joy and connection. A devoted fan and season ticket holder of Ohio State football, he wore scarlet and gray year-round. He had encyclopedic knowledge of high school football, bourbon, and Ohio State recruits.
He found purpose in woodworking, created neighborhood free libraries and spent many hours crafting and wrapping Christmas gifts for his family. Gary and Sandy built their happy place at the cabin on Lake Louise where he found relaxation through long "to-do" lists, pulling water skiers, grilling, and giving his famous "50 cent" boat tours. His love for a variety of music and his iPod added rhythm to his days and provided the soundtrack for campfire gatherings with family and friends. Gary also had a variety of passions which included weekly coffee groups, SCUBA diving, golf, national parks and anything that interested his grandkids.
He is lovingly remembered by Sandy, his wife of 56 years; daughters, Heather (Mike) Lunt and Sarah (Blane) Winslow; son, Adam (Cheryl) Smith; grandchildren, Patrick Lunt, Natalie Lunt, Lindsey Lunt, Marissa Lunt, Stella Winslow, Josephine Winslow, Charlie Winslow, Sophia Smith, Garrett Smith, and Shirley Smith; siblings, Greg (Karen) Smith and Cindy (Brett) Epling; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Deanie and Vaught "Doc" Smith, as well as his youngest son, Andrew. He leaves behind a legacy of friendship, dedication, and love. His life was a testament to quiet strength, humility, and the joy found in everyday moments - and may those qualities live on in the hearts of those he touched.
