Jack Hollenbeck Obituary

Jack L. Hollenbeck, 82, of Midland, passed away Jan. 19, 2019 at Woodland Hospice House in Mount Pleasant. He was born Jan. 8, 1937 in Midland to the late Isaac and Lillian Mae (Suttlift) Hollenbeck and lived his entire life in this community graduating from Midland High in 1956. Jack served in the U.S. Army National Guard during the Korean Conflict.

On Aug. 3, 1958 he married Antoinette Anthony of Bay City.

He is survived by his wife; three children, Martyn and Laura Hollenbeck, Brian Hollenbeck, Jacki Hollenbeck all of Midland; six grandchildren, Georgia (John) Gay, Mallorie Hollenbeck, Ashley (Leo) Downs, Janae Hollenbeck and fiancé Luke Zimmerman, Shea Hollenbeck and Lex Hollenbeck; two great-grandchildren, Carlisle Downs, Allie Gay.

Jack was a quiet man who lived by the concept that the highest form of appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. He taught us to appreciate everyone, be honest and to show up to work. He retired from General Motor after 35 years in 1996 but always worked a second job for local funeral homes for 55 years having started with Wilson Funeral Home in 1964. After he fully retired from GM, Jack went back to working at Wilson MILLER Funeral Home until retiring in 2017 due to health reasons. Jack felt working at the funeral home was a calling he did not believe the focus was on death but rather serving the living, the survivors to help them deal with their grief. He believed that "Grief shared is grief diminished and joy shared is joy increases". He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Midland Odd Fellows Lodge 418 where held the position of Grand Noble, and American Legion Berryhill Post 615. He and Toni wintered in Las Vegas for many year where he also worked at the former Hites Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Jack will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2019 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael T. Sawicki officiating. Interment will be in Midland City Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive guests at Wilson MILLER Funeral Home, 4210 N. Saginaw Road, Midland on Thursday from 2-8 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jack's name may be offered to Woodland Hospice Place in Mount Pleasant. Personal messages of condolence maybe offered to the family at www.wilson-miller.com

Having the good fortune to have known Jack as a friend, I am certainly saddened by this news. I certainly can remember all of the fun times with Jack and the Hollenbeck family and my parents up in Gladwin. I think that If everyone in the world could have even a little bit more of Jack's calm demeanor, we would all be better for it.

Prayers out to all of the Hollenbeck family.

Love and Respect,

Eric and Debbie Bilow
