Jon Lanning Obituary

Jon Carter Lanning, 38, beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, passed away March 1, 2016, at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah. Jon was born Aug. 19, 1977 and raised in the Midwest, but after moving to Utah in 1997 he never looked back. Jon loved snowboarding and the mountains, and his joy for life was felt by all who knew him.

Jon loved music, particularly live music, and loved to attend concerts with his friends. He also had a huge place in his heart and soul for KRCL, a non-profit listener-supported community radio station in Salt Lake City. Jon donated annually to their listener fund drives, but his charity went further than just the radio station. Jon donated often to local Salt Lake charities, including the Ronald McDonald House. He was truly an amazing person.

Jon is survived by his parents, George (Linda) Lanning of Mio, Marji (Roger) Spencer of Midland; and siblings Eric Lanning of Fort Wayne, Ind., Dan (Hilary) Lanning of Grand Rapids, Kate (Jean-Yves) Hurtubise of Marysville, Ohio and Mandy Rodriguez of Battle Creek. Jon was a cherished uncle to Ava Lanning, Cosette Hurtubise, Beatrice Lanning, Rejean "Bear" Hurtubise, Juniper Lanning, Elise Hurtubise, Samuel Hurtubise, Brennan Rodriguez and Tyler Rodriguez. He is also survived by his former wife, Karin Skidmore, and best friends, Eric Junge and Paul Winter all of Salt Lake City, Utah.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to all of Jon's friends at the Snowbird Resort. They took care of him, and took care to make sure that his family understood the love that Jon had for Hidden Peak and the Mineral Basin.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., March 18, 2016, at the Cunningham/Taylor Funeral Home, Freeland. Family and friends will officiate. Per Jon's wishes cremation has already taken place. Friends may call at the Cunningham/Taylor Funeral Home, 310 E. Washington St., Freeland, on Friday, from 10 a.m. until time of Services. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or to KRCL.org in lieu of flowers. You may reference Jon Lanning in memorial. A luncheon will follow services at the American Legion, Midland, Mich., post 165, beginning at 1 p.m.

Manning Family, I am so sorry for your loss of Jon. I have nothing but positive memories of Jon and our childhood years of 7-12 grade. I remember how hard it was when we split and Jon went to Dow and I went to Midland. Jon was a class act, a great catcher, who was always honest about how I didn't have the best fastball on the team. Loved playing sports with him. I was so appreciative of how accepting the whole Lanning family was of me. Thank you! My best Junior high memories were at your house with Jon. He was a great friend me, as I look through Facebook mentions, it was wonderful to see how his email and charm effected so many people. As he started his life in Utah, although I am sad to say we we were apart, I take solace in knowing that he created memories like mine, wherever he went. Will miss you Jon-you were indeed a great great man.

My very deepest condolences to Jon's family and friends. I've known Jon since 7th grade at Central Intermediate. We have been friends ever since, and although we lost touch after college years when he would visit his family in Michigan we would have lunch together, and talk about everything under the sun. I would have to take my daughters with me and he was always so kind and generous to them. He was such a gentle soul and has a special place in my heart!

My son, Erik Junge, was Jon's roommate for many years in Salt Lake City. Jon was definitely Erik's very best friend and Erik always spoke highly of him. They both enjoyed skiing, music, sports and I know Erik will miss him terribly. My thoughts go with the Lanning family...Jon left with the whole ski world in Utah with many good memories. I'll be thinking of you on March 18th. Prayers for you all. Sincerely, Mary (Junge) Kyhos from Maryland.

I'm so sorry to hear about Jon's passing. He was one of the most thoughtful, caring people I knew. He was a best friend to my daughter since grade school. He will be truly missed by both of us. RIP in Jon and thoughts & prayers to his family.
