Larry Rampy Obituary

Larry Wilson Rampy, 74, former Midland resident, died Friday, March 22, 2013, at the Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Virginia. He was born Aug. 31, 1938, son of the late Stanley William and Gladys Leota (Wilson) Rampy.

Larry spent most of his childhood growing up in Evansville, Ind. and graduated from Benjamin Bosse High School in 1956. His education continued at the Indiana University where he received an AB degree in chemistry in 1961 and again at the University of Michigan, where he received a master's degree in pharmaceutical chemistry and a Ph.D in medicinal chemistry.

Larry met his wife, Carol, while in graduate school and they were married on Aug. 22, 1964. They shared 29 happy years together. She preceded him in death in 1994 after a difficult battle with cancer.

Larry retired from The Dow Chemical Co. in 1995, where he spent the bulk of his career as senior director and leader of Product Stewardship. Shortly after Carol's death, Larry moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the American Chemistry Council. After 13 productive years at ACC, Larry retired in 2008 but continued to consult for the association for a few years thereafter.

Larry was very active in both of his sons' lives as well as the lives of his two grandchildren. He lived life to the fullest and enjoyed many hobbies, including boating on the Chesapeake Bay, attending Washington Capitals hockey games, playing with his dog, Duke, biking, traveling, and spending time with his beloved grandchildren. Larry also volunteered his time at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington and delivering meals with the Meals on Wheels program. Larry was a kind, loving and wonderful father and grandfather who always put his family first. He was generous to a fault and a great friend to many. He had friendships that lasted more than 65 years.

Surviving him are his two sons, Mark Rampy (engaged to Carla Megargee), Matthew and Stacey Rampy and their two children, Katie and Jack, who reside in the Washington, D.C. area. In addition to his wife, Carol and parents, Larry was preceded in death by both of his siblings, Phillip Rampy and Pat Watson.

A memorial service in Larry's honor will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2013, at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St. Pastor Gerald Ferguson of Trinity Lutheran Church will officiate, with inurnment to follow in Midland City cemetery. Larry's family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

With his quiet presence, never stopping smile and friendliness, ready to give a hand or just a simple advice, Larry was one of the founding pillars of our community. Knowing him for the last 15 years was a great privilege, which we will always treasure. “Rest in peace”

Snappy dresser-sharp wit-always with a smile and even bigger smile when he tooled around in his convertible-always fun to have around...he will be sorely missed by all his neighbors at Rees Place. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.

From exchanging ski stories, taking dog walks together & keeping an eye out on each other's homes, we miss Larry's presence (and of course Duke's too) in our neighborhood. He was a wonderful and kind hearted neighbor with a great spirit, and our condolences and prayers go out to his family.

As my boss for many years at ACC, Larry was quick to laugh, slow to anger and absolute in his support for his employees. He was a wonderful man and will be missed greatly.

Matt, Mark & Families -
The news of Larry dying was devastating and we share your sorrow. There is no question, that he was my best friend going back to our days in grade school and beyond and that friendship will never be forgotten. The adventures we shared were always special filled with wonderful stories, many of which involved your families and what everyone was doing. He was a great man and a great friend and we will think of him often and miss him until we meet up with him one day for another adventure. Susanne joins me in expressing our condolences to all of you, and she too says, "Thanks for the memories." Sorry we couldn't be with you in Midland. All the best to you in the days ahead. He sure loved and cherished each of you. Take good care. Tom Stein, Newburgh, Indiana
