Mary Chomistek Obituary

Mary "Jetty" Jeanette Chomistek
Mary "Jetty" Jeanette Chomistek, of Midland, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. Born on March 29, 1930, in Evansville, Indiana, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Arthur; her parents, Hilda and Gus Spindler; and her sisters Ruth Wagner, Sue (Hank) Mitchell, and Kathy Marble. She is survived by her sister Joan (Kenneth, deceased) Neywick.
Jetty was blessed with her four children, John (Cathy), Margaret (Tanehesi), Patti, and Randy (Karen); her 17 grandchildren; and her 10 great-grandchildren.
Jetty and Art met at Indiana University, where she earned her teaching degree in 1953. They married shortly after and began their life together first, during Art's service in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Mississippi and Puerto Rico, where their first son, John, was born. After Art's military service, they settled in Midland, Michigan.
Jetty taught elementary school in Puerto Rico and at Blessed Sacrament in Midland before becoming a devoted homemaker. She and Art shared a deep commitment to service - volunteering to teach children of local migrant workers, welcoming foreign exchange students from Vietnam and Mexico, and fostering a Cuban refugee, Francesco Quesada, until he was reunited with his mother.
Jetty loved decorating for the holidays, crafting for church bazaars, singing in the St. Bridget choir, and participating in prayer and Rosary groups. A passionate supporter of the Right to Life movement, she never hesitated to advocate for her beliefs.
She also cherished travel, exploring Ireland (with choir), Mexico, family in Czechoslovakia, Canada, family reunions in the Smoky Mountains, and many places across the U.S.
After Art's passing, Jetty amazed her family by mastering personal finance with confidence and independence. She was always there when her children or grandchildren needed her. Her strength, generosity, and love will forever inspire us.
Thank you, Mom. We love you.
