Nancy Pollack Obituary

Nancy Pollack died June 13, 2018 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing following complications from an earlier stroke. She was born in Evansville, Ind., Nov. 1, 1940 to her late parents Charles and Evelyn (Markham) Williams. She graduated from Evansville College and Purdue University with degrees in education. At Purdue, she met Jim, her future husband.

Nancy taught school in Indiana, Massachusetts and California before son Charles and daughter Jill were born in Midland. Once the kids were older, she taught English as a second language for many years to men and women brought to the area by their employers.

Nancy began her music career playing French horn in her high school and college marching bands. She was a charter member of the Midland Concert Band. She was also a founding parent of the Midland Montessori School.

In Midland, she has been an active member of Chapter CB of the PEO women's organization and was a member of the Monday Club.

Nancy had a vibrant spirit, a sharp wit and loved the arts. She also enjoyed cruising, fishing and spending time at the family cottage in Gladwin County.

In addition to her husband Jim, Nancy is survived by her children, Charles (Ginger) of Rochester Hills and Jill (Adrian Breeman) of Silver Springs, Md.; and two grandchildren, Victoria Pollack and Peter Breeman.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Smith-Miner Funeral Home on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018 at 3 p.m. Friends may visit with the family from 2 p.m. until the time of service.

Those planning on making an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Midland Concert Band in her name.

Nancy, or as I've known her as Mrs. Pollack, tutored me everyday after school in Midland when I first moved to the U.S. from Japan in 1983. I was 14. I spoke no word of English, and my parents were told there's a generous woman in the community willing to teach their daughter how to read, write and speak English. I went to college, got my Master's and today, I have a very successful life doing what I love. I attribute my drive and achievements to Mrs. Pollack who taught me with amazing patience and kindness. In 1984, when our tutoring arrangement ended, she gave me a lovely book called My Michigan which is what led me to look for her. I was somehow drawn to look at the book today, 34 years later. I am deeply saddened that I did not reach out to her while she was still alive and tell her how grateful I am that I had that special time with her. She not only taught me English but impacted my life in ways I will never ever forget. Thank you Mrs. Pollack, and my deepest sympathy to her family.
