Nathaniel Butler Obituary

Nathaniel R. Butler, Jr., born Aug. 15, 1983 in Midland, joined his heavenly family on Jan. 30, 2008.

He gave his life to the Lord on Aug. 20, 2006. He was predeceased by his sisters, Natalie and Nadine Butler, his paternal grandparents Pete "Bo" & Bessie Butler and a special cousin, Vanetta Aaron.

Nate Jr., as he was affectionately called, was a graduate of Midland High School and was a senior at Northwood University majoring in Automotive After-marketing. Nate Jr. loved his muscle cars; he enjoyed drawing and playing his guitars; he loved the game of baseball (thanks Dave Hays) and he enjoyed playing hockey, skate boarding, fishing, snow boarding and hanging out with his dear, dear friends.

He leaves behind to mourn his loss, his father and mother Nathaniel and Sherry (Jackson) Butler; his brother Nicholas Butler; grandparents Reverend and Mrs. Stellie J. Jackson; uncles and aunts; Leroy and Roberta Butler, James Jackson, Delores and Claude Eichelberger, Diana & Christopher Currence, Vivian and Huedell McKinney, Lottie and Michael Harrell; cousins, Tracey, Bryant (Jennifer), and Kevin Butler, Stellie and Austin Jackson, Christian Myers, David and Jonathan Currence, Brandon Butler, Jauckline Harrell, and Devin Bracy; his god-parents, three god-sisters, one god-brother, and a whole host of other relatives and friends. We are going to miss our "gentle giant"!

Funeral services for Nate Jr. will be held on Monday, Feb. 4, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Christian Celebration Center, 6100 Swede Ave. in Midland, with the Rev. Joel Stocker officiating. Burial will be at Midland City Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. until the time of service. The family will meet with friends at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008 and from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Pardee Cancer Center of Midland, in honor of Nate Jr.'s father, or the Christian Celebration Center College and Career Ministry. On a personal level, Nate was not only a great college buddy and roommate, he was, and always will be, my best friend. I love Nate like a brother and he will never be forgotten. I feel very fortunate just to know him and he will always be missed. Words cannot express how deeply saddened I am by the loss your loved one: My heart sank and I was shocked when I heard of his passing. I will always cherish the great times we shared such as precious memories of playing guitar and going to many concerts with him. I'll always remember Nate as a very inspiring, caring, creative, loyal, and multi-talented friend: I truly admired all the original music he composed and his drawings always amazed me. He had the best taste in music.

Sherry, my adopted mom, I love you, you are such a blessing in my life and have been here for me and helped me thru so much. They always say there is a bond between mother and daughters but, as moms with sons, we know there is also a very special bond and love between mothers and sons. I know how much you love Nate Jr and I can only imagine the heart break you are going through. I wish there was a way that I could help you and ease your pain. These next few days are going to be hard to get through but after everyone has gone back home it is going to be harder. Just know that if and when you need someone I am here for you, even if it is the middle of the night & you just need someone to listen while you do all the talking, I am here for you. Sherry, Nate, Nicholas and to all your family members, I pray that your thoughts and memories of your life with Nate Jr will comfort you and that the Good Lord will give you strength to help you get through each day. I will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers every day.

February 2, 2008

Nate, Sherry & Nicholas,
You are in all our thoughts and prayers. I have never met a young person who had the ability to spread joy to everyone he came in contact with the way that "little" Nate did. His teammates loved and adored him. The dugout was always a happy place when Nate was there. He was the most humble young man I've ever met. Many times I'd watch his home runs disappear into the tops of the trees beyond the fences and every single time he rounded second base he'd look up and it was the same expression. That huge beaming smile. I will never forget that smile, that look, that joy as he'd shake my hand rounding third base. Still he never celebrated his home runs, but he ALWAYS celebrated his teammates. That speaks volumes about his character. The job you've done as parents with both your fine sons is something you can take immense pride in. It has been a difficult few days and the days ahead will be difficult as well. Know we are always here for you. Nate will be deeply missed. He was a joy to coach and be around. He was a very special person to us, as you all are.

Dear Sherry, Nate, Nick and Family:

Sherry, you know I so admire your courage and dignity in the face of great trials; this is but another in a long list. My heart breaks for you and your families' loss.

You remain in my prayer envelope (you know what that means.)

I don't have remedy for your sorrow: but we both know Someone who does. And may the same arms that welcomed your precious Nate Jr. into Paradise--hold and comfort you and your family until the day--when you, husband Nate, and brother Nick are reunited with Natalie, Nadine, and Nate Jr.

For, as believers we know that this life is but a heartbeat in eternity; and sooner than later, we will ALL be together with our Wonderful Savior and our loved ones in Paradise...

What a day of rejoicing that will be!

Love; Jodi

Dear Nate, Sherry, & Nick: I want you to know how special your son and brother is in my life. Our sons were so young when they played on their first baseball team together, and all those hours and hours we were in the stands - not willing to miss a minute of play! As the boys got older, they added hockey as a shared sport they played together. Once again we shared the bleachers and time together. All the while watching this talented, kind, serious, committed, caring, thoughtful, young boy working his way into my heart by his wonderful life traits. When I take time to reflect on life, I cherish these memories most. I miss sharing these young boys lives. I miss Nate. So even though he has passed, he is still very much in my heart - where he will be forever remembered.
With deepest sorrow and heart-warming memories forever,

I wasn't super close with Nate, but I did spend one summer as his "playground partner" working for the City of Midland in the Parks and Recreation Department. Nate and I were the only "adults" in charge of numerous elementary school aged children every day for two months, and working with him was such a pleasure. He worked wonderfully with the kids and his sense of humor helped me get through many long summer days. I'm very sad to hear about this loss and I will keep the Butlers in my prayers.

I have not talked to Nate in years, but I still remember how loyal and great of a person he was. We went to school together, rode bikes together and played guitar together. My wife and I recently moved into the neighborhood and I would see Nate drive by and we would wave at each other. My heart sank when I heard the terrible news. I feel truely blessed to have known Nate. My heart goes out to the family and all of his friends.

To the Butler family - I am very sorry to hear news about Nate. I was classmate of Nate's at Northwood. Nate was a very nice guy, who had an awesome personality and a great attitude. I am glad to have had the change to get to know him. Things will not be the same without Nate and he will be deeply missed. You are all in my thoughts in prayers. God Bless.
