Paul Rau Obituary

Paul Conrad Rau lost his courageous and hard-fought battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, March 30, 2019. Paul was born Oct. 1, 1953, in Warrensburg, Mo. to Gilbert and Elinor (Aumann) Rau.

He lived life large and filled it full of fun and adventure. He loved camping, kayaking, reading, taking photos, spending time at the beach, hiking through the woods, collecting (i.e., pack rat), tailgating at Central Michigan University (his alma mater) football games, playing with his cat, listening to music on his stereo (the cost of which is unknown to his wife) and spending time with family and friends. Throughout his life, Paul was a passionate lover of music. With his sharp musical ear and tenacious pursuit of excellence, he became an audiophile and researched, tested out and collected quality stereo equipment.

He was a journalist and he was proud of his profession. During his career he worked at The Morning Sun, the Midland Daily News and the Saginaw News as a reporter and an editor. During his life he volunteered as a tutor for illiterate adults, spent time reading to elementary children, and delivered meals to home bound seniors through the Meals on Wheels program.

On June 6, 1993, he married Janelle Steckley, and he was wild about her to the end. He is survived by Janelle and the other great loves of his life, including his pride and joy, his son Eric, Eric's wife, Aimee, and their daughters, Ashtynn and Andersynn. He is also survived by his brothers, Gilbert (Diane) Rau of Stevensville and Russell (Shelly) Rau of Holly; his sister, Elizabeth Rau of Eureka, Calif.; his brother-in law, John (Susan) Steckley; and his sister-in-law, Sue Ann Steckley of Athens, Ten..; his nephews, Douglas, Jacob, and Noah Rau, Cory McCubbrey and Jason Steckley; his niece, Alanah Rau; and multiple great-nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life and a luncheon will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2019, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Best Western in Midland, MI, at 5221 Bay City Road.

To Paul's family... You have my deepest sympathy at the loss of an outstanding, fun-loving, and fine individual. I went to school with Paul at the Lab School through High School. Although I haven't seen him in years, whenever I've thought of him it has brought a smile to my face. He was truly a nice guy and his kind heart lives on.

Sending condolences to Paul's wife and family. I had the pleasure of working with Paul, first at the Midland Daily News when I was a CMU student, and then again in 1996 when I joined the Saginaw News. Paul was an outstanding journalist, and a funny guy. Am blessed to have had a chance to know him and work with him.

My deepest condolences to all of Paul's family. In addition to being a super-talented editor and reporter (I learned a ton from Paul when I interned at the Saginaw News!) he was a uniquely kind person who made everyone around him feel important.

It was always a pleasure to have Paul come in our camera shop. Fun to talk to and he had a great knowledge of the old equipment. He helped me many times research and find info on some of the odd cameras that would come that would come through the store. My thoughts are with Janelle and the Family.

Oh, I am so sorry to hear this. My deepest condolences to Janelle, Eric, and all of Paul's family. Paul was one of my editors at The Saginaw News during my time there, from 1990 to 1994. I learned a ton from him. I also attended a few of the all-day seafood bashes Janelle and Paul hosted at their lake house, setting a standard that few hosts have lived up to since. Thank you for reminding me what an audiophile Paul was. He advised me when I was putting together my first real stereo, bringing me to high-end stores and sharing catalogs from all the top dealers. I knew then I was way out of my league, but his enthusiasm was a joy to witness.

Rest well, Paul.

Paul you will be greatly missed. You could always make me laugh, you big nut! We were so young when we both started working at the MDN. What a great crew we had there and all the fun times outside of work too. After you married Janelle, we continued to have fun going to music festivals, McKay's and playing so, so many Aggravation tournaments, as well as cards and other games. I'm so happy you've been a part of my life for the past 41 years. Janelle, Eric, Aimee and Granddaughters: I know how much your hearts are hurting. Keep your wonderful memories close. I love you all too.
