Richard Hickerson Obituary

Richard "Butch" D. Hickerson, 83, of Midland, passed gently Thursday morning, April 17, 2008, at the MidMichigan Medical Center while surrounded and supported by the prayers of his loving family.

He was born Nov. 12, 1924, in Midland, son of the late Everett and Anna Josephine (Sherwood) Hickerson. Richard was a veteran of World War II and was awarded two Bronze Stars for his service as a combat medic. Through his honorable actions, dignified manner, and fiercely competitive spirit, Richard had a way of inspiring and bringing out the very best from his cherished family. He had led a successful career working his way up to assistant postmaster and was then able to enjoy 28 years of activities in retirement. An avid golfer, Richard was nationally recognized for "shooting his age" at the age of 76. His other passions included, water trail competitions, hunting, building, shooting pool, and figure skating. He had won a silver medal in senior olympics in ping pong. Richard led an honorable life and left an indelible mark on those he loved.

He is survived by his wife, Nora Ann (Scott), whom he married Sept. 4, 1947, in Bay City; and his children, John Richard (Susan Marie) Hickerson of Pine Prairie, La.; James Hickerson of Arlington, Texas, and Vicki Winchester of Midland. Richard is also survived by his grandchildren, John Richard (Raychelle) Hickerson of Harrison, Thomas Albert Hickerson of Indianapolis, Ind., Daniel Thomas (Kelly) Long of Midland, Joel Aaron (Erin) Winchester of Lansing, Lyndsey Ann (Joshua) Pare' of New Haven, Conn., Robert "Max" Bourne of Midland, and Robert Delos (Jamie) Hickerson of Arlington, Texas; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Verna LaColla of Bay City, Zeta (Jack) Gordon of Lakeland, Fla., Mitzi (Walter) Gorney of Bay City; and sister-in-laws, Kathleen Hickerson of Lakeland, Fla. and Jane Hickerson of Gaylord. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Everett Junior, John Duane, and Joseph Willard Hickerson.

Funeral services for Richard will take place 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008, from the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 W. Wheeler St. Interment will follow in Homer Cemetery with military honors presented by the Midland Area Veterans.

Richard's family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 4 to 8 p.m. and again on Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of service.

Please accept my condolences on Butch's passing. It was always good to see him at Currie Golf Course and talk about many topics including the old days in Midland. Of course we also talked about golf and I enjoyed golfing with him with the morning retiree's group.
