Ronald Kagel Obituary

Ronald O. Kagel
Ronald O. Kagel, known affectionately as Ron to friends and family, passed away on January 8, 2024, at the age of 87. Born on January 16, 1936, in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, Ron's journey came to a peaceful close in Midland, Michigan. He leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and a life dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and the betterment of the world around him.
Ron is survived by his beloved wife, Lois Kagel of Midland, and their daughters: Sharon (Randy Walther) Calkins of Midland, Jennifer (Ted) Kagel-Bukowski of Madisonburg, PA, and Kathryn of Midland. His memory will be cherished by his grandchildren, Debra Ennis, Kelsey (Ethan) Ennis-Thompson, Gina (Jordan) Strife, Randall Calkins, Ryan Calkins and his great-grandson Elias Thompson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law John Kaercher.
An alumnus of the University of Wisconsin, Ron went on to earn his PhD in physical chemistry from the University of Minnesota, showcasing his intelligence and analytical mind from an early age. His professional career was a testament to his dedication and expertise. Dr. Kagel served at the Dow Chemical Company, specializing in vibrational spectroscopy and environmental analyses and regulations. He was a respected educator, sharing his knowledge at renowned institutions including the University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Michigan Tech., Saginaw Valley College (SVSU), Vanderbuilt University, Fisk University, and UCLA. Ron was author and co-author of over 100 reports and publications, including two books and several book chapters. His contributions to the scientific community were recognized through his membership and leadership in several organizations such as the Coblentz Society, American Chemical Society, New York Academy of Sciences, American Institute of Chemists, and Association for the Advancement of Science. His academic excellence was honored through his election as a fellow of the American Institute of Chemists in 1986 and his inclusion in esteemed publications like Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in Science and Technology, and American Men and Women of Science.
Not only was Ron a dedicated scientist and scholar, but he was also instrumental in the sphere of environmental stewardship. He founded and chaired the Coalition for Responsible Waste Incineration, advocating for sustainable practices and responsible environmental policies. His commitment to the environment was further underscored by the numerous awards and accolades he received, including the V.A. Stenger Award from the Dow Chemical Company and recognition from the U.S. EPA for his peer review contributions.
Retirement did not slow Ron down; it simply shifted the focus of his passions. Ron had a lifelong love of reading. He embraced modern technology through social media both personally and professionally, mentoring students from the University of Minnesota. Ron was the self-appointed chair of the family "Svengoolie Fan Club". Many hours were spent cheering for his beloved Green Bay Packers. He also enjoyed exploring exotic culinary recipes in the kitchen. As a young man, he was an enthusiastic camper and angler, treasuring the time spent in nature with his family and friends. His adventurous spirit was evident in the state-side and global travels he embarked on with his wife, Lois. Ron was a dedicated member of the original Midland Granite Club, the Dow Softball League, and St. John's Lutheran Church, where he played a pivotal role in establishing a preschool. Ron's legacy will live on through his family and his many friends. He lived a good full life and always gave back and supported his communities.
