Gregory Kane Obituary

Dr. Gregory (Greg) Lance Kane, 72, of Elkton, and formerly of Palatka, passed away peacefully at home and went to be with the Lord on May 22, 2024.
Greg was a local Optometrist in Palatka for over 34 years before retiring in 2017. He came to Palatka after completing his Doctor of Optometry degree at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee.
He graduated from Seminole High School and attended the University of Florida and was proud to be a "Gator." He graduated from Hillsborough Community College with his Associate degree in Opticianry. He received his Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate degrees from The South College of Optometry.
Greg loved to play golf and played every week until he became ill. He was also a Jaguar and a Gator fan. He loved to scuba dive and to spend time with his children and grandchildren. He also loved to spend time in his garden and yard.
Greg was very active in volunteering for the Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) and took numerous trips to Nicaragua and Peru, using his vacation time to help those with vision problems. Often he would see over 100 patients a day while there. He served as President of the organization and was on the Board of Directors. His volunteering locally included participation with the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, Special Olympics, Vision Quest, local health fairs and he participated in a University of Florida glaucoma treatment study. He worked at the PGA Golf Tournaments in Ponte Vedra to help raise money for VOSH for many years.
Greg opened his Palatka office in the summer of 1983 and moved to the Palm Avenue location in 1986. He opened additional offices in St. Augustine and Palm Coast, retiring in 2017.
He was married to his wife, Patty, for 51 years and has two daughters, Jennifer Kane and Stacey Kane.
He is also survived by his mother, Thelma Kane; brother and his wife, Michael and Gail Kane; and sister, Cindi Tranquellino. His grandchildren are Jared Kane, Ryan Turner, Luke Stephens and Shelby Stephens. His nephews and nieces include Dallas Kane, Rebecca Tranquellino and Andrew Tranquellino.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 30 at 2 p.m. at Craig's Funeral Home, 1475 Old Dixie Highway in St. Augustine. The eulogy will be given by clergy of San Sebastian Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions and donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation in his name.
Arrangements are entrusted to Craig's Funeral Home in St. Augustine.

So very sorry to hear of Greg´s passing. I have so many fond memories of mission trips to Nicaragua with Greg. He was a truly kind and self less individual.

My first Vosh mission was with Greg. He was an amazing person and a great eye doctor who donated his precious time to helping others. We went on several eye missons together. Each trip was ultra successful. Greg will and is missed by his Vosh team members. RIP Susan Stees
