Roan Varnes Obituary

Roan Edward Varnes Jr., age 80, passed away on July 11, 2025, in Palatka, FL.
He was born on October 24, 1944, at Mary Lawson Hospital in Palatka, FL, to Roan Edward Varnes and Edith Shirley Walters. Ed was a cherished member of his community and a loving figure in the lives of his family and friends.
Ed graduated from Melrose High School and furthered his education at St. Johns River Junior College.
His professional life was marked by a distinguished career as a Civil Engineer with the Florida Department of Transportation and later as a consultant for Reynolds, Smith and Hills. His early work centered around farming, which fostered a lifelong connection to the land and its stewardship.
A veteran of the United States Army, Ed served during the Vietnam War, where he was both a Ranger and Military Police. His service was characterized by the honor and diligence that he carried into his civilian life.
Ed was a man of many passions. He was a fervent supporter of the Florida Gators, along with various other college and professional sports teams. His love for the outdoors was profound. He was knowledgeable about animals, plants, and farming, and he was mechanically inclined, often sharing his skills with others. Ed also enjoyed reading books on a variety of topics ranging from classic literature to nonfiction, and everything in between. He loved music and played bass guitar in a band with friends. He was known for engaging in vibrant conversations, always eager to impart his knowledge through storytelling.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Tanner Varnes; daughter, Carmen Varnes McKinney; son-in-law, John McKinney; and grandson, Maxx McKinney. As well as dogs, Rio and Emma; cats, Greyster, Kevin, and Billy. He also leaves behind many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends who became family.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Roan Edward Varnes and Edith Shirley Walters; his son, Kaylon Varnes; Uncle, Homer and Aunt Annie Sikes that raised him; and many cherished relatives, friends, and pets.
Ed was a man who made sure no one ever felt excluded, often going out of his way to ensure everyone was comfortable, especially at family gatherings where he always ensured everyone was well-fed. He was especially proud of being a Grandpa and had a special relationship with his grandson, Maxx. He had a fierce love, loyalty, and protectiveness for his family and friends.
His warmth, generosity, and spirited conversation will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Crevasses Simple Cremation assisted the family.

I'm sitting here alone writing you a letter because you meant so much to me, and I can't seem to stop crying, which is funny because I know you would laugh at me if you knew I was crying. Thank you for being a second Dad, thank you for putting up with me staying over with Kaylon virtually every weekend from 3rd grade until I moved away, and thank you for teaching me how to laugh at life- I have more to say but I'm writing it all down. I know I'll see you again my friend.

Ed was an amazing man and meant more to me than I would ever be able to describe. He was my little league coach, funny, someone I loved and respected, and for much of my childhood he was a second dad. Ed is the reason I like baseball and sometimes still enjoy listening to games on the radio instead of the TV, because he was right - the radio announcers are way better. So, so many wonderful memories and experiences that changed my life for the better. Ed always has held a special place in my heart. I will miss him .
