Family-Placed Funeral Notice
AMY HOWE ANDRE Age 98, passed away at JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, Florida on July 30, 2004. A long-time resident of Lantana, Amy moved to Meridian in 1998 from her home on Euclid Avenue where she had resided since 1963 with her late husband, Marion Oliver Andre (deceased in 1975). She then moved to Medicana in February 2004. Amy was well known locally as an actress, drama director and speech coach, occupying the position of Head of the Drama and Speech Department at the Palm Beach Day School from 1963 until her retirement in 1985. In her acting career she was a fine monologist, performing one-act plays for a wide variety of audiences across the U.S. and on radio. She attended the University of Nebraska, Luther College and the American Academy of Dramatic Art in New York. Amy also sang and played piano in church choirs, some under her husband's direction. She also taught piano and one of her students became a composer, co-authoring the acclaimed musical “Kismet.” Born in Lincoln, NB in 1905, Amy first moved to Florida with her family (parents Frank and Ida Mae Howe and two sisters and a brother) to Lake Worth in 1920, leaving another brother and sister in Nebraska. She met and married Marion, then a teacher of History at Lake Worth High School and its very first football coach in 1926. Their first child, the late Keith Lynn Andre of Lexington, IL, was born by flashlight shortly after the devastating hurricane of the fall of 1928. She moved to NY State in 1930, settling in Port Jervis, where she began to pursue her love of drama. Before moving back to Florida with Marion in 1963, Amy was the drama and speech director at St. Mary's Academy, Peekskill, NY; at Rye Country Day School, Rye NY; and Friends Academy, Locust Valley, NY. Amy was a member of several professional societies including the International Platform Association and the National Forensic Society, and was honored by being listed in the Who's Who of American and Canadian Women in 1965 to 1969. She was also a member of the Quote Club of the Palm Beaches; and listed in the National Social Directory of 2000 Women of Achievement, England; the Royal Blue Book, London. Amy used her writing skills as a columnist with The Palm Beacher and The Palm Beach Illustrated. In addition to her educational duties, Amy gave private lessons in speech and theater to a variety of students, both individuals and groups such as doctors, military officers and other professionals. She acted with and directed plays and shows with little theater groups in NY and Florida. Her one-woman theater presentations were favorites of church and social groups. Amy also attended the United Methodist Church of Boynton Beach, Fl. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Dorsey-E. Earl Smith Funeral Home, 3041 Kirk Road, Lake Worth, FL.
