Family-Placed ObituaryCALVIN MURRAY SCHWARTZ Calvin Murray Schwartz, age 92, of Palm Beach Gardens, passed away on July 10, 2012 at home in Devonshire at PGA National. Cal is the son of Rae Preger and Benjamin Schwartz and was born in Plainfield, NJ. He graduated from Plainfield High School and Oberlin College, Oberlin, OH. He was the proud Editor of Hi-Ho-Hi Yearbook at Oberlin. Cal joined the Coast Guard in 1942, and served as a Lt. Senior Grade during World War II. Cal worked in the Real Estate business in Madison, Wisconsin for several years before returning to New Jersey and joining his brother in his real estate office in Plainfield. He served as President of the Plainfield Board of Realtors. Cal later became a real estate appraiser and received his MAI Certification. He was president of Calvin M. Schwartz Appraisal Company in Scotch Plains, NJ which became Schwartz, Sterling and Associates in 1984. He retired in 1989. He was an influential member of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers serving on the Board of Directors and President of the New Jersey Chapter. He served as Chairman of the Litigation Valuation Committee. Cal was an avid golfer as a member of Twin Brooks Country Club in Watchung, NJ and PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. He was active in the PGA Men's Golf Association and won the Club Championship Best Player 80 years and over. Cal was also active for over 20 years in the Homeowner's Association of PGA and worked during the transition of the association from the builder to the residents. This was the largest transition in the country. He and his wife, Gloria worked tirelessly for Temple Judea for over 20 years and were instrumental in helping the Temple move from West Palm Beach to its current location in Palm Beach Gardens. Cal was also known as the "Mayor of Devonshire" for his active work in politics and voter registration. Surviving are Gloria Hay Schwartz, his wife of 21 years; a daughter, Virginia Schwartz Higgins and her husband, James of Jupiter, FL; a son, John B. Schwartz and his wife, Claudia of Hochberg, Germany; a brother, Ralph Schwartz of Bridgewater, NJ; two stepdaughters, Ellen Hay Newman and her husband, Milton of New York, NY and Ronnie Hill and her husband, Dick of Dickerson, MD; eight grandchildren, Michael, Mark, Daniel, Laura, Alexandra, Nicholas, Anna-Christina and Lily, six great-grandchildren, Jacob, Emily, Claire, Jack, Lila, and Ange and Matlock the cat and Benny the bird. His first wife, Anne Strause, predeceased Cal. Cal was loved and respected by all who knew him for his humor, curiosity, generosity, professionalism, and caring for those around him. He was truly the man who gave unconditional love and he will be immensely missed. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, July 16 at 11:30 AM at Devonshire at PGA National, Devonshire Way, Palm Beach Gardens, FL.
