Chuck "Skipper Chuck" Zink

Chuck Zink Obituary

Charles DeWayne Zink, Chuck Zink, "Skipper Chuck" to tens of thousands of children in Miami, and as the host of "The Senior Side" to tens of thousands of WXEL radio listeners in Palm Beach County and beyond, died Wednesday at Boca Raton's Hospice By the Sea, of complications following a pair of strokes suffered within the last few months. He was 79.

Childless himself, Mr. Zink was a father figure to many children who can still recall his cheery manner and voice, broadcast in grainy black and white, over Miami's WTVJ from 1956 to 1979. Mr. Zink also hosted locally the very first muscular dystrophy telethon fund-raiser on behalf of Jerry Lewis. A letter of appreciation from Lewis hung in Mr. Zink's room at the Hospice.

His was a familiar voice to the listeners of WXEL in recent years, where he hosted two programs, The Senior Side, on Sunday mornings and a three-hour jazz, blues and big-band music show which he enlivened with personal anecdotes about many of the great performers. He had an encyclopedic memory for personal details about music-makers, going back to his days as a young Marine in the Pacific theater of World War II, when music from home was a precious link with America.

Toward the end, his room was thronged by well-wishers, so many that idle visitors had to be discouraged from intruding on his last hours. Hospice staffers were overwhelmed by telephone calls from people anxious to know his condition. Younger attendants were amazed to learn what a celebrity they had on their hands.

How did I get so lucky? As a child in the 50's and 60's I watched your show everyday. As an adult in the mid 70's as a PSC for MDA I'd coordinated visits for the children to enjoy you and your crew in the studio. You were at every MDA event and of course the Annual Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon.

You made us smile, laugh, taught us how to love, learn, lessons in tolerance and so much more. I've stored each of those moments under 'treasured memories' for instant recall. Rest well beyond the horizon Skipper .

In 1960 I turned 5 years old. 3 of my friends and I went on The Popeye Playhouse for my birthday. Mr Zink was a most gracious host. He made all of us feel welcome and I'll never forget how special he made us feel.

I remember Chuck landing in a Bell Helicopter at Gulfstream Park in the early 60's, we were there for a kids show of some kind. He got out and shook our hands before taking over as MC of the event. All was a class act and someone you could hold up as an example of what is right and decent.

I was a good friend of skipper Chuck.
I was on the show 37 times beginning when I was six years old all the way up to 10 years old . I was a regular on the show and enjoyed every minute of it. When I saw the checks obituary I was very saddened by it .
Was a great man, love kids, and instilled good morals and good things and the children .
He told me I could be anything I wanted to be when I was 10 years old. I told my wanted to be a doctor, he said do it, I did. I've been enough calories for 44 years plus. I'm now in the twilight of my career and approaching 70 years old.
Dr.Arnie Adler
I wonderful parents Lou and Josi Adler brought me 37 times back-and-forth to the studio . Lots of wonderful memories.

Thank You Chuck, for being an inspiration to myself, and many generations before me. I was 10 years old, when your show ended, but the memories of watching you first thing in the morning, will last a lifetime. I am so grateful that you were part of my childhood. God Bless you, and your Family

I was in the show as a kid in the late 70's - won the ballon drop and got to tell the riddle on the same show. Who's bigger? Mr. Bigger, Mrs. Bigger or their baby. Their baby is a little bigger. My claim to fame as a kid. Chuck was always a positive role model and a bridge from the greatest generation to gen x.

Oh wow, I had no idea, so sorry to hear of Skipper Chucks passing. I was on the show several times as a child growing up in South Florida. I was even lucky enough to have gotten the lucky balloon at "balloon drop time" I was showered with so many things it was overwhelming. I will never ever forget watching the show every morning before school and being on the show. Wow what great memories. Thanks for all you did. RIP. Skipper Chuck.

My belated condolences to the family of "Skipper Chuck" Zink. I got to be on "Popeye Playhouse" back in either 1965 or 1966 (I believe it was the latter); it was an experience I will always treasure. As a person of color, I also appreciated the stand he took concerning segregation of the kids on his show. I hope somewhere in Miami (near the water, in keeping with the show's theme),that there is a statue created in his honor like they have done here in Washington state for J.P. Patches (another beloved kid's show host). If not, there ought to be; this man more than deserves it. I hope there are DVD's of Popeye Playhouse available; I'd like to purchase one so I can relive those wonderful childhood memories. It's a crying shame we don't have kids' shows of this quality anymore. Thank you for everything, Skipper Chuck! You will be sorely missed.

For Chuck...Hundreds of thousands
baby boomers knew and loved
the man called Skipper.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Having moved from Miami in the 70's I had lost touch with the goings on there. Some of us were thinking about the good old days and favorite tv shows and Skipper Chuck was mentioned many times. I just wanted you to know that many former children now grown have fond memories of our Skipper Chuck. My belated condolences to his family.

Skipper Chuck was great! I grew up in the sixties and seventies watching his show. I lived in a samll town 90 miles north of Miami, so never got to be be in the audience. Years latter when living in Fort Lauderdale I was pleased to hear him on talk radio. Will really miss him. A good guy, and a brave man, who stood up for what was right, even when it might endanger him.

Chuck Zink was a one of a kind. He cared allot about people and it showed. I didn't know him personally but my family raised money for Muscular Dystrophy by having a carnival in our back yard. We were introduced on his show in the 70's. That was fun. I called Chuck once to find out about getting a copy of the show we were on or just a copy of a show. During that conversation I was amazed, his voice hasn't changed a bit. It brought back great memories hearing his voice and growing up watching his shows. We will miss him. Our thoughts and preyers go out to his family.

I was privileged to be the first girl "sidekick" to Chuck Zink from the first day of "Popeye Playhouse" in January 1957 until October 1958. I was a college student at the University of Miami.

Here is an photo link to a very early photo. It's Twins Day, so you are NOT seeing double. Dick McCarthy is "Glumbo Despair" and our parrot is "Spingy MeHearty."

Chuck offered me more guidance, encouragement, and affection through the next 30 years of my life. I was an only child of seventeen when we met. To me, he was sweet, attractive and experienced. Chuck cared about me like an older brother or perhaps a father.

Now I am a 68 year old grandmother who has enjoyed a media career of more than thirty-five years -- I'm still working in radio out West. Chuck, I miss you in so many ways, and still can't believe you're gone. How I wish I had had the chance to say to you --"'Bye-bye for a while, and keep a smile."

Wishing you and Clarice peace for eternity...

Credit Chuck Zink for my first exposure to counterculture! One of my earliest TV memories was of the Skipper clearing hippies out of a house party hosted by Aly Alligator - a psychedelic premise if ever there was one. (I'm still wondering if this segment of the show was a figment of my imagination.) He was WAY cooler than Captain Kangaroo! I grew up in Miami but never did get to be on his show. But he was always a local tv presence, a fixture of my hometown in days gone by...do I miss him? Aye aye, Skipper!

I was on the Skipper Chuck show twice. I always watched the show getting ready for school whether I was dressing or eating breakfast. I even remember asking my mother if they (on the show) could see me getting dressed in front of the TV. Naive that I was at the time, I didn't want to miss a moment of the show by running to my room to get dressed and miss something funny or zany on the show. I was saddened as a child when the show was cancelled due to the popularity of cartoons on the former independent Channel 6 and from the growth of the market that forced CBS' national morning talk shows down to us at the local level. The two fingered "V" symbol will always mean victory to me but whenever anyone wishes me peace these days, I reply with three fingers always stating, "Peace, Love and Happiness." Most don't get it, but in an ode to Skipper Chuck, that phrase has never left my heart. My only regret was I never got back to So. Fla. to see or hear you again before you passed on. Fair winds and following seas. See you again someday.

I remember Skipper Chuck so fondly. I was thrilled to be on his show once for a playmate's birthday. Another time I won an Etcha-Sketch from the contest where they'd draw a name and a viewer would win the same prize as the live guest. What a thrill! He also went to our church when I was young. As a young child, this was like being in the presence of royalty. Good bye Skipper.

I first met "Skipper Chuck" when I appeared on his "Popeye Playhouse" show in 1964.
I got the chance to see him again years later around 1973 when he visited "Camera Corner" in downtown Miami where I was working as a salesman. He was getting ready to leave on a European trip with a WTVJ contest winner and his mother. He wanted his Mamiya/Sekor camera checked out before leaving for the trip. What struck me at that time was his genuine friendliness and decency. He WAS as nice as what you saw on television. There was nothing phony about him.
Years later, we met again when he got a job at WCIX Channel 6 as the afternoon movie host. I had recently started working at the TV station in 1981 as a news photographer, and was thrilled to have "Skipper" working at the same place I was working in. Never would I have thought this would happen. A man I had so much respect for from the time I was a child, working along side with me.
I truly cherish having known him.
I'll miss you "Skipper".

I am 38 years old and can remember my brother and I watching the show daily.I recall going to the studio and meeting him once during a public event,I must have been 6 or 7 years old. I am saddened to hear of Chuck Zink's passing. I grew up in the Homestead area, and Skipper Chuck's Popeye Playhouse brings a flood of memories to my family, and I. We would watch the show, and we enjoyed watching Popeye's cartoons, and also enjoyed listening to Skipper Chuck and Uncle Don play and sing songs. I even had the opportunity to perform on the "Talent Time" segment with my musical group. Looking back at some of the old pictures on some of the sites, I saw one with the clock on the wall and I remembered watching the show; and then waiting for 7:50 to arrive because I would leave the house at that time to head off to school. I still remember meeting you, and how you encouraged us to have fun. Thank you so much for the positive influence that you were in my life. Thank you Mr. Zink for investing your life into the South Fla. community, and your work with MDA. God Bless! You will be missed!

Talking with a co-worker this morning, I recalled memories of growing up with Skipper Chuck so, I regressed many years by looking him up. Saddened to hear of his passing albiet warm and fuzzy to relive the memories with this site. I was a guest on his show after my childhood friend and I raised money by having a Backyard Carnival for Muscular Distrophy. He was so sweet asking about the broken arm I was sporting. My children can recite this memory from the many times I have shared it. [email protected]

Having grown up in Hollywood, Florida in the early 1960's and 70's, watching Skipper Chuck each weekday morning was a prerequisite for getting out the door to go to school. He was so unpretentious and approachable. I remember being lucky enough to sit in his studio audience when I was 10 - and it really was a wonderful experience. Chuck Zink touched the lives of many throughout his life - and I feel blessed to have been one of them. He was the best!

I worked at The Country Club of Miami in the late 60's & early 70's. Chuck was one of members next door neighbor (Mr. Bob Parris) and I would get to see him on a regular basis. Out of all the hundreds of famous and want-a-be famous people I met and knew during those years--Chuck was the most down to earth regular guy. He was a very remarkable man and I loved working with him. I learned alot. Thanks old friend...

I just learned of Skipper Chuck's passing, and I mourn our lose. I loved Skipper Chuck, and as a child in the 70's I was part of his studio audience in Florida. I brought him a gift and gave it him in a lunchroom. He put his arm around me and to everyone around he said, "This is why I do this, this is what it's all about". I was beaming that Skipper would give ME this attention! He influenced me for the good, and I'll always be grateful.

I have fond memories of watching "Skipper Chuck" in the mid-1970s and the show playing the Disco version of the Star Wars theme. He always knew what the kids liked. As an adult, I listened to him on WJNA radio, because of my love of Swing and the classic vocalists, so I sort of came full circle with Chuck Zink. I cannot recall my childhood without thinking of him. R.I.P.

I remember watching the "Skipper Chuck Show" when I was a child. I honestly don't remember a lot about the show (its been over 30 years since I've seen it), but I *do* remember that the phrase "peace, love and happiness" became the equivalent to "have a nice day" between my Mother and I. Obviously, the show had an impact on me if 30 years later, I can remember that. It was a much simpler time then, and I'm glad that Skipper Chuck was a part of it. My greastest memory of my childhood was when I met him in person. The Skipper was having breakfast with some business associates and he noticed that I was looking at him. He got up from his table and came over spoke with me for awhile and then gave me an autograph. I wish that my daugters could have seen the show, The Skipper was very special. Skip thank you for some of the most entertaining and educational television of my young life. Your loved and will be missed..

It was a keystone in growing up in Miami during the 60's. I remember Skipper Chuck as the ultimate status symbol for the Elementary school set. It was our show, a wonderful safe corner of the world that was our own. Thank you Skipper,

I grew up in Miami and was on 'The Skipper Chuck Show' when I was 6 years old. It was a thrill and I still have the miniature baseball bat I was given. I also fondly remember his hosting the Orange Bowl Parade.

He was truly a class act and will be missed.

The news of Skipper Chuck's passing

was slow to reach me, and it leaves

this world without a wonderful man

and leader. Without fanfare, he

helped lead thousands of kids toward

a good life, including me as I grew

up in Ft. Lauderdale in the 50's.

Heaven has certainly received an

angel in Skipper Chuck.

I enjoyed Skipper Chuck as my sister did, and we also were on the Skipper Chuck show when we were kids. I remember once I was picked to be able to tell my joke and pick from the treasure chest. I always had these memories and am thankful for them... Peace and love Chuck

Heartfelt condolences to his relatives and fans. The last time I saw his show would probably be in 77 when I was 11. My brother and I were on one time. We had to whisper in his ear the answer to "by whom are we more influenced, our parents or friends?"

I have to believe that in some way his influence affects my kids (who are more or less all toddlers) even now.

Thanks Skipper Chuck!

I have always had fond memories of the Skipper Chuck show growing up in West Palm Beach back in the 1960's & 1970's. There will never ever be a show to top its family orientated and class. Anyone who got to experience being on the show new it was like being part of their family. I was blessed to have that opportunity. Chuck Zink was always proud to entertain several communities and functions and anyone who crossed his path will always have a piece of "Skipper Chuck" in their heart and will never forget the fond mmemories he gave us. I wish there were more people like him in todays world and I will truly miss him.

I was fortunate enough to grow up in WPB and see Skipper Chuck on tv every morning. My sister was lucky enough to be on the show with her Brownie troop. He was allways a kind voice, a gentle laugh and a true friend I could count on. His smile could light up a room and did for all us Florida kids in the 60's and 70's. He will allways remain in all our hearts forever xo

You were like a member of my family. I remember when you visited Biscayne Elementary School in Miami Beach in 1958. There wasn't a seat empty in the auditorium. Your memory will live with all Miami's "baby-boomers" .

I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale. The Chuck Zink show got me up every morning in the late 60's and early 70's before going to school. It was so, funny..

I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Zink in the early 80's and listened to him as often as possible ever since. Although I'm half his age, I always enjoyed simply the comforting sound of his voice. My well wishes and deep sympathy are extended to his family. He will always be a one-of-a-kind symbol for humanity.
