Daniel TULLY Obituary

TULLY, Daniel Patrick
(1932 - 2016) Daniel P. Tully, of Hobe Sound, Florida, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, surrounded by his family. Dan is survived by his wife of 59 years, Grace, and four children and their spouses: Eileen and Paul Ceglarski, Daniel and Dianne Tully, Timothy and Marianne Tully, and Elizabeth and Peter Berry. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Brian, Alexandra, Kathryn, Taylor, Daniel, Caroline, Timothy, Anne, Megan, Jayne, Claire, Grace and Jake; and two great-grandchildren: Hayden and Heath. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Kaitlin Ceglarski. Dan was born in 1932 in Queens, New York. He attended St. John's University and graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor's in Business Administration. From 1953 to 1955 he served in the U.S. Army, and then began his long career at Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith. He spent 42 years at Merrill Lynch and rose from an accounting trainee to Chairman and CEO, retiring in 1997. During his leadership, Merrill Lynch was the world's largest securities firm, with 50,000 employees and operating in 45 countries. He lived a principled life which embodied the five pillars of Merrill Lynch: Client Focus, Respect for the Individual, Teamwork, Responsible Citizenship, and Integrity. Beyond his achievements with Merrill Lynch, Dan played an active leadership role in the financial services industry as a whole. During various points in his career he served as Vice Chairman of the American Stock Exchange, Vice Chairman of the Securities Industry Association, Vice Chairman of the New York Stock Exchange, and Chairman of the National Association of Securities Dealers. At the request of the Securities and Exchange Commission he led a group of prominent business leaders as Chairman of the Tully Commission, which established a set of principles for compensation and investment advice within the securities industry. He also served the City of New York, as Chairman for the Central Park Conservancy's Wonders of New York campaign, which made possible much of the restoration of Central Park in the 1990s. He helped lead a group of 31 trusted friends and former colleagues to found Fieldpoint Private Bank and Trust in 2008. A wealth advisory and private banking firm, Fieldpoint has gone on to earn numerous industry awards and today advises many successful families across the U.S. and internationally. Dan held a great affinity for his ancestral Ireland. He served as President of the Ireland United States Council for Commerce and Industry and as a Commissioner for the National Pensions Reserve Fund. He loved traveling and playing golf all over Ireland but had a special connection to Waterville Golf Links and with the wonderful people of the Village. Dan and Grace's long-time support of Stamford Hospital in Stamford, Connecticut, included Dan's service as a Director of the Stamford Hospital Foundation and as a Director and Chairman of the Hospital's Board of Incorporators. In 2002, he and Grace led the campaign to build a new outpatient, diagnostic and preventative care facility, named the Tully Health Center. The Center has redefined care in the region by focusing on outpatient services and has helped hundreds of thousands of people enjoy healthier lives. The model has been studied and copied by other communities around the country. Per Dan's wishes, there will be a private family service. He and the family ask that those whose lives he touched take some time doing what he loved most - being with family. Donations in Dan's memory may be made to: The Tully Health Center, c/o Stamford Hospital Foundation, 1351 Washington Boulevard, Suite #202, Stamford, CT 06902

Dan was a leader and a true family man. When I worked at Merrill Lynch, he set the tone of the entire firm that we were one big family and each member was important. This world needs more Dan Tullys. We will truly miss you Dan but your wonderful legacy lives on. May God comfort all of Dan's loved ones and encourage all of us to do the things he wants us to do every day. Warmest regards, Greg Pipkin

I grew up with the Tully Family--just another kid from another one of the many large, Irish-American families in Stamford. While some is known publicly of the many philanthropic contributions Dan Tully made along the way, during his exceptional career and after---what may not be as well-known is how much he personally helped and contributed to the city of Stamford, Ct, and to its youth, over the years.
Dan helped me get my very first internship, straight out of high school. And, as I have heard from so many over the years: Dan had
similarly helped so many in Stamford. Whether you were a neighbor's kid, the delivery guy, or the exec across town who had just been laid off, Dan always seemed to be able to find the time to offer a few sage words of advice, or even some time out of his incredibly busy schedule for a business lunch or even a phone call made on your behalf where appropriate.
Dan Tully wasnt just the kind of Wall Street Executive who wrote a check to fulfill some kind of philanthropic status quo. Instead, he regulalry and continuously gave of his time, and he was as loyal and giving to the city and families of Stamford as he was to his own family and to the Merrill Lynch family. And, all three blossomed greatly under his authentic generosity and leadership. He will be remembered by many; including this kid from Stamford, and all her MANY brothers. - From: One of the McDermotts, from Sweet Briar Rd!

Dan Tully was real leader with a instinct for how to motivate people. He made every employee feel important and valued. Merrill Lynch was a great firm under Dan and he will be missed.
