David HANCOCK Obituary

HANCOCK, David L.

David Lee Hancock, age 58, of Sebastian, FL, passed away into the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ on May 4, 2014 at Sebastian Medical Center after experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. David was born January 20, 1956 in Arlington Virginia, the first born child of Horace and Jane Hancock. David was a graduate of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Law. He was in the private practice of law for approximately 25 years in the Treasure Coast region of Florida (Indian River, St. Lucie, and Martin Counties) and in Brevard County, Florida. David served for over 3 years in this nation's military on active duty with the United States Air Force during the Vietnam conflict. He was a crash firefighter on the "flight line" at a SAC base and as a crash firefighting technical training instructor at an ATC base. After my honorable discharge from active duty at the end of the Vietnam conflict, he served as a certified municipal law enforcement officer for approximately 6 years before pursuing a career practicing law. David also served as legal counsel to the Indian River County and Brevard County Value Adjustment Boards and the Indian River County Code Enforcement Board. He was appointed as the City of Sebastian, Florida Code Enforcement Special Magistrate in 2009. David was pleased to be involved in many professional, civic, and not-for-profit organizations including the Florida Bar Association (Real Property, Trusts and Probate Section), the Indian River County Bar Association, the Indian River Estate Planning Council, Inc., the Indian River County Real Property Council, Inc., the Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce (Legislative and Government Affairs Committee), Operation Hope of Greater Florida, Inc., Vero Beach Opera, Inc., and the Deborah Voigt and Vero Beach Opera Foundation Trust. David is survived by his father Horace H. Hancock Jr. and step mother Janet Hancock, Charlotte, NC; brothers Samuel (Jackie) Hancock, Oil City, PA; Thomas (Leslie) Hancock, Charlotte, NC; Stephen (Anne) Hancock, Erie, PA; sister Lisa (Chris) Bengel, Waterford, PA; son Justin David Vaughn Hancock, Chattanooga, TN; fiancee Lynn Thomas, Stuart, FL. Additionally, David is survived by step family members of the Landas family along with many nieces and nephews (Hancock & Landas). He is predeceased by his mother Jane (Butters) Hancock. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 6:00pm at Lakeside Fellowship Church, 8000 66th Ave., Vero Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Operation Hope of Greater Florida, Fellsmere, FL (www.operationhopefl.org). David will always be remembered for his intellect, dry sense of humor and kind nature. He touched many lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
