Donald McArt Obituary

Don McArt, who had several Broadway, television and movie roles before becoming a co-host and frequent star at his sister Jan McArt's Boca Raton dinner theater, died on Tuesday at the age of 90.

Mr. McArt was born in Ohio, and after college went into radio in Indiana before venturing to New York to become an actor. He got his first Broadway role in Kiss and Tell, and would also appear in such productions as Pajama Tops, Barefoot In the Park, The Odd Couple and There's a Girl in My Soup, both on Broadway and in national touring companies.

He also worked on several Disney films, including The Absent-Minded Professor and Son of Flubber. Mr. McArt made a good-sized mark in television, appearing in guest roles on The Addams Family, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. He would continue to act in films until 1995, when he appeared in the Melanie Griffith-Antonio Banderas comedy Two Much. In addition to his acting parts, Mr. McArt also produced television, wrote for radio, produced and directed Hollywood stage productions and acted in commercials. He also completed a doctor of divinity degree in 1974, and became a minister at the Science of Mind Center, Church of Religious Science in Whittier, Calif., for 17 years.

In 1990, Mr. McArt moved to Boca Raton to perform in productions at his sister Jan McArt's theaters in Boca Raton, Miami and Key West, appearing in such shows Sugar Babies, Finian's Rainbow and his final performance with them, Some Like It Hot. (He'd been appearing in sister Jan's shows since the Boca theater opened in 1977 with The Merry Widow.) Mr. McArt also toured nationally as George Burns in Say Goodnight Gracie during the last four years.

A celebration of Mr. McArt's life will be held Dec. 28 at the Keith C. and Elaine Johnson Wold Performing Arts Center at Lynn University in Boca Raton.

Dear Jan,
Don was the dearest, classiest, kindest, and most supportive man. It is with great sadness that this message is written. The theater world will miss him dearly as will all those who knew him, but his lovely persona and positive influence will remain with us always. My thoughts are with you especially at this blessed holiday season. Gwen Arment
