EUGENE FRANCIS MERKERT Of Loxahatchee, FL, age 92, born on August 13, 1918 in Jamaica, NY. He is survived by wife, Tuyet Merkert, and his son, Eugene James Merkert, of Loxahatchee, and his daughter, Judy DuprŽ of Austin, TX; his grandchildren, Brent DuprŽ, Danielle Nemec and Stacey Cropley of Austin, TX, and a sister, Marguerite Lisk of South Borough, MA. His son, James Merkert, of Boston, MA, predeceased him. Mr. Merkert attended New York University, and then served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was the owner of Merkert Enterprises, Inc. which had 13 major divisions in New England, New York, Pennsylvania and Florida. His company became the largest food broker in the United States by the time John Kennedy was President. Mr. Merkert was an innovator and well-known in the industry. He was the recipient of many awards including the Freedoms Foundation Award in 1964 presented by President Eisenhower, and an Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration Degree from Stonehill College. Mr. Merkert was also once part owner of the Boston Bruins and the Boston Celtics and active with his private charities.
