Frank Cook Obituary

Dr. Frank Cook, an orthopedic surgeon at Jupiter Medical Center for almost 25 years, died Thursday morning on a Jupiter beach, police confirmed.

Cook, 59, was famous in the community for treating professional athletes like former NBA star Magic Johnson and players for St. Louis Cardinals and Florida Marlins baseball teams.

Friends of Cook described him as a generous man who loved to surf.

"We'll remember Dr. Cook wearing a Hawaiian shirt and driving his pick-up truck to the beach," said Doug Carpenter, who was friends with Cook for almost 30 years. "You couldn't ask for a better friend or doctor."

Just heard the sad news. Worked with Dr. Cook for ten years. So sorry for everyone's loss. He was a great doctor and a wonderful man. He will be missed.

I met Frank and Sklar on a surf trip to Indo in April 2014....evident was the love father and son had for eachother. During the trip I hit the reef and split my foot open, back on the boat Frank emerges with his magnifying glasses on and a fully equipped suture kit. But, instead for getting to work...he decides to make a lesson out of it....teaching the cook how to stitch. As I understand it "That was Frank"
One of my favorite memories of that epic adventure..!

It was my great pleasure to have worked for and with Dr. Frank Cook for 14 yrs. at PBOI, He always had a friendly hello and maybe a joke or two, and when I had to have him see a son or my husband who eventually needed surgery, he made you feel like he was very honored to help them and it was I who was very honored to have known and worked for such a wonderful man and doctor. GOD BLESS FRANK COOK and especially GOD BLESS JULIE and SKYLER. May GOD also BLESS SALLY!

Dr. Frank did a partial knee replacement that allowed my Professional Bowling career to continue for many years until my retirement from active participation in 2010. Heeding Dr. Frank's advice, I took 9 months before resuming tournament play. BEST ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED FROM A DOCTOR.
THANK YOU DR. FRANK and God speed you to your place in heaven.

Just heard about Dr. Frank Cook's passing this morning. Am shocked and saddened, and my heart goes out to his family, staff and friends. He treated me for a chronic knee condition, and I had literally planned to call this morning to make an appointment to discuss a needed surgery before being told the news. He was a rare doctor, always taking the time to thoroughly address concerns and explain treatment options, and my husband was looking forward to consulting him as well. He was kind, patient and informative, and had a charming, unique personality - certainly the only doctor I've ever been to who wore Hawaiian shirts embroidered "The Big Kahuna!" I'm sorry I didn't know about his memorial services and wasn't able to pay my respects. He absolutely had my respect, and I send my heartfelt condolences to all of his loved ones.

I've known Frank and Julie since I started at Jupiter Medical Center in 1989. My heart goes out to Julie and Skylar. I have so many stories that many of you know, but my favorite reminds me of his generosity and quick wit. My brother fractured his hand in the Bahamas, and the ER doc at Marsh Harbour said I needed to get him back and have immediate treatment. I called up Frank, and he told me to have him go to the ER. Unfortunately, my brother did not have insurance, and Frank still saw him at my clinic. I put my brother's arm to sleep, and Frank had my 10 year old son scrub in to help. Part way through the surgery, my brother looked up and asked Frank, " What's with the kid?" to which Frank quickly replied, " On your insurance plan, that is all you can afford." My brother's hand has been perfect ever since. I will really miss you, Frank. Larry

Frank Cook was everything everyone has already said. He did one knee surgery 15 years ago and 2 years ago when I went to see him and needed another surgery, he wasn't on my insurance plan. So he said, "I'm going to be in the O.R. on Thursday anyway, I'll just do it for you". Enough said...

I met Frank 1990 when he replaced my A.C.L. He gave me the option to watch or be knocked out. I chose to watch the Pro at work he stated it would be fun. 2/3rds of the way he called the waiting room on speaker phone to tell my wife all was going well and to order take out Pizza. Frank had such humor as a doctor. 18years later I had a stroke and while I was in Jupiter Hospital I woke one morning and Frank was there reading my chart. He explained how serious my condition was and not to hesitate with what to do I had no options but to have open heart surgery. Frank referred me to a Heart Specialist and stated he trusted him enough to let him preform the surgery in his garage if he was in my shoes. 6 years later after my surgery I'm still surfing on the old knee. I'm sure Frank is surfing the endless summer cotton candy cloudbreaks in heaven that all surfers dream about. Thank You for caring and sharing your gift to those who were in need of your help. R.I.P. Dr. Cook May God watch over your family and give them peace.

My heart was so heavy when I heard the sad news. After the service celebrating Frank's life, my heart felt a little lighter. Everyone that spoke on Thursday truly served him well. They honored his spirit by bringing all of us to laughter more than tears. I believe he would rejoice in that. In 1986, I began my nursing career at St. Mary's Orthopedic unit. I have fond memories of working with him. Thoughts of those days still make me laugh and I will hold them close to my heart. May God bless Frank Cook, and all who love him, with His love and peace.

Dr. Cook performed Rotator Cuff Surgery on both of my Wife's shoulders in 2011 + 2013. Frank made us both very comfortable with his explanation + his personality. frank gave us a CD of the Surgery, which we took to our Physical therapy Center in NY,which no one had ever seen in the Center, thus helping all Therapists who saw it--all 15 of them--who knows how many additional people he helped by sharing his surgical skills through his CDs.
We're devastated by this tragic news, and will pray for Frank + his Family
Rest in Peace,Dr. Cook

I met Frank when I was approximately 17 years old. I was a senior @ Satellite High. He was a friend of my oldest sisters.

I just found out recently that this was the same Frank Cook who lived down here near me when my sister was home attending a high school reunion.

I had a rough childhood, & a father who was not an especially nice person. My senior year was really tough.

I will never forget him coming over one day to pick up my sister, and giving me the most wonderful and heartfelt pep talk. It is still so fresh in my mind, it seems just like yesterday. (I am now 51).

There are few people in my life, that made this kind of impression on me. He was with out a doubt one of them.

My regret is that when I found out
this was "The" Frank Cook, I did not
stop by & re - introduce myself & give him a squeeze on the neck!

Julie and Skylar, I do not know you.
But, you have been in my prayers and in my thoughts and will continue to be.

There are no words, but as everyone else, I hope all the kind words, loving thoughts and God will help ease your heartache.

Frank, sorry I did not stop by and give you that hug on the neck.

You have made this world a better place. You will be so missed by people, even like me. That have not
seen you for years, but thought of you often.

God Bless and RIP

Dearest Julie and Skylar,
My deepest condolences for your great loss. We met when Jenee and Skylar were at Lighthouse Elementary. Frank lit up the room, he was so genuine, such a special person. A few years ago when Jenee had issues with her elbow, there was never a doubt of who I entrusted her care. Sending you Love and Light for healing and peace. You are in my prayers. Rest in peace, Frank.

I will never ever forget the great times we had together teasing each other and laughing with patients over his corny jokes. He was my hero, my go to, my therapist, my doctor and most of all he was my friend and I would like to thank Julie and Skylar for sharing him with all of us. He will forever be in my heart, and I will miss him always. Be at peace Frank Cook aka Big Kahuna and I love you Julie and Skylar

Terrible loss. He was an amazing doctor and no one here needs to be told what an exceptional person he was, and in myriad different ways. No medical provider has ever spent so much time talking to me about my issues. He will be sorely missed by all those he touched as a caring doctor and as a benevolent and compassionate human being. Skylar, you went to school with our oldest girl (Prosperina in The Tempest). You helped my wife build that cave set for the play. We have remembered you before this but we really want you to know that although we all have to suffer the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune", NO one deserves to suffer tragedy like this in their lives. I know there is nothing we can say or do that will help - only the passage of time can ease the anguish. But always remember your father was an exceptional person in many ways and the manifold memories in which he still lives are positive to a degree very, very few people will ever attain.

Take care of yourselves and those you love. We can do no better thing while we can.

Dr. Cook was a godsend after suffering for 5 years with the mystery to the pain in my legs. He knew exactly what it was after placing me on a treadmill and performing a test for compartment syndrome. His reputation had my utmost confidence and the surgery he performed on both legs was a complete success.
I am so saddened by the news of his passing and the deep loss his family is experiencing, along with the loss of a great surgeon to the medical community.

Kent, Tess, and Cole my thoughts and prayers are with you everyday. Mom (Sally) I promise to help you through this. I am saddened to hear that the world lost such a wonderful person. Not many doctors would take a call at home at 7AM on a Sunday morning and meet you at the hospital a few hours later for a complicated surgery, but then, not many people are like him. I had a difficult recovery, but I got through it in part because of his positive attitude. I'll remember his Hawaiian shirts, how he called me "the pride of south beach" and I'll think of him every time I run. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. If those of us who knew him only for a time feel this way, I can only imagine the void his absence leaves in his family.

I will never forget the patience he practiced with me when he taught me how to kneeboard many years ago out on the lake when Skylar, Tess and I were in fifth grade. I am currently in Germany and weeping over the loss of an astounding and talented doctor and surgeon. I knew him at both Good Sam and later JMC. When my husband needed knee surgery there is no one else I would ever have considered for his physician.

As a long time resident of Jupiter and a beach lover, he was always visible either jogging towards the beach or surfing in the water. Rest in peace Dr. Cook. You will be sorely missed.

Frank was my friend, fellow surfer, the best orthopod I have ever known and worked with, and an even better person. He was also my surgeon, 2 ACL recons on my left knee and a recent cleanout scope in June-all of which (like many of his friends, neighbors, fellow athletes and all those pro athletes) kept me in the game, doing all those great activites outdoors on land and sea that enriched our lives. Thank you, Frank, for all that and more, from the bottom of my heart. My prayers and best wishes to his family. I will never forget you Frank,

I was very fortunate to have found Dr. Cook before I had knee surgery with either of the two NYC surgeons (You know the type...the ones with the autographed memorabilia in their offices from their athletic star patients). As his x-Ray's were done standing up, he was able to diagnose more than the others did and discovered I had a piece of floating cartlidge in my knee as well. I knew immediately how brilliant he was. He reminded me of Tom Selleck and always wore Hawaiian shorts, as my husband and I are known to do, so I called him "Magnum." I loved his business card that said "quietly treating athletes for over 20 years," unlike the NYC doctors who advertised who their patients were. Dr. Cook made me feel as important as his superstar patients and I gather from reading all of the messages, he did the same for everyone. He was handsome, charming, funny, extremely patient while explaining the diagnosis and the treatment to his patients and one of the best doctors I have ever had, as well as a truly great man. My husband and I, having spent our lives living near the water in NY and FL. shared his love of the ocean and respect his desire to spend his last moments on this earth at the beach. A tremendous loss. We are just devastated as obviously everyone who ever knew him is. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. RIP "Magnum!"

So smart. So compassionate. So personable and professional. He helped me heal through at least 3-4 maladies. Always in the least invasive ways. He was an awesome doctor who made everyone feel like a family member! He will be missed!

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this terrible time. Skyler you were one of my top students and I am so sad for you and your mom. Your dad was one of the greatest. He went out of his way for both my husband and me. When I broke my knee during the hurricane he came to our home to read my exray. Your dad just repaired my husband's shoulder. We both have been so touched by the care your dad gave to us. He will be greatly missed by so many. You and your family will be in our continual thoughts and prayers. So sad for you. Although a colleague of his did my husband's back surgery years ago, Frank took the time to come out to the waiting room and reassure me that all was okay. When asked if there was anything he could do for me, inspired by my wise-cracking Neighbor (not Dr.) Frank, I said you could write "See Rock City" on his posterior. Days later, looking in the mirror, Bob noticed a large tourist ad attached to him, written in surgical ink.
What joy Frank brought to so many people!

Frank will be misssed by myself & many others. I was luck enough to live next to Frank & Julie in Ocean Dune Circle in Jupiter and enjoyed having them over to watch the UF vs. FSU game once or twice; especially when UF was winning. Also, Frank & Ray would join some of my co-workers & I in a Sunday morning pick-up (two-hand touch) football games which I know he & Ray enjoyed. I count myself as being forunate to have known Frank.

It's well known that Frank was a skilled surgeon, who improved the lives of innumerable patients.

I'd like to share a memory of Frank with a different twist. A few years ago as a hurricane approached Jupiter with winds already kicking-up, Frank and his then young son, Skylar arrived at my house unexpectedly at dusk with tools in hand, and went right to work installing my 2nd. story window shutters. I was unable to do it myself because of a recent knee surgery. Frank heard about my situation, so he and Skylar hustled down the street and got the job done in a nick of time. No, Frank didn't do my surgery, but he helped me in a way I'lll never forget. He saved my home from potential damage and gave me peace of mind. That's the kind of guy he was; help a neighbor in need, and be a great role model for Skylar in one act of kindness.

Our condolences to family and friends, who count knowing Frank as one of life's blessings.

I was sorry to read of the passing of Frank, this morning. I found him to be an excellent surgeon and kind man with a special enthusiasm that was contagious. He helped me immensely several years ago with shoulder surgery. He was truly a talented man, dedicated to helping others.

Frank Cook was my friend for over 20 years , partner at Palm Beach Orthopedic Institute, partner at Northpoint Surgery Center and mentor in the operating room and on the playing field. He expertly repaired my ACL when even he said I was too old for the rigors of basketball and I played for another 20 years.
We operated many times together and he would just "hang hook " for me; his phrase for assisting me on a foot surgery but really an excuse to be there for his patient.
He came to my home urgently on a Sunday to show me a patients MRI but only if I had a periodic table available for Skylar to review for a school project .
He called my home looking for me . When my wife said I wasn't home he changed course to let her know that a John Schilero had left his wallet at the local strip club.
I could go on and on
My deepest heartfelt condolences to you Julie and Skylar .

Julie and Skylar,
I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved husband and father. The obituary captured so many special qualities about Frank, and the love that bound your hearts so closely together. I know the days ahead will be difficult as a new way of life without this special man must be forged for you and Skylar -- a good life filled with the laughter and joy Frank would want you to have again. Rest in peace dear Frank. Remember the good times Julie, and find your wonderful smile again. I love you Cousin!

Two shattered knees-10yrs apart. 12 inches of scars-virtually undetectable. When I was in agony you leaned down to my 2 little daughters with that contagious smile as you gave them a hug & promised them their mom would be riding bikes next to them again "in no time!" I'll be there Thurs in a dress & high heels proudly displaying my scars as my tribute to you as a wonderful human being & a wonderful surgeon. We've all been so lucky that our paths have crossed!

Three years ago, At age 13, my son Andrew tore his acl and meniscus playing lacrosse. Dr. Cook was highly recommended for his compassion, talent as a surgeon, athlete himself, and a father. He was an amazing doctor, his bed side manner and his humor put us at ease. The night after the surgery the phone rang and the person on the other end asked if we minded if he took something from our trash (we were throwing out a mattress). I thought it to be strange, but then the door bell rang and there stood Dr. Cook with a big smile on his face, laughing! He said I'm here to check on my superstar patient! He came in and sat on the couch with Andrew and said that he was going away for the weekend and just wanted to make sure he was ok! We live in Stuart. What other doctor would do that!
We are praying for his loved ones, for peace and understanding during this time. God bless.
