Jim MILLER Obituary

MILLER, Dr. Jim "J. D."

Jimmy Don Miller was born in Marlow, OK in 1940. He grew up in the small community of Bray, OK, on the family farm. He received his undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University, his master's degree from Purdue University and his PhD from Auburn University. He met his wife Donna (Champion) Miller while at Purdue. In 1970, they moved to Pahokee, as Jim took a job with the USDA Sugarcane Research Station in Canal Point. They raised their three children there. Jim remained with USDA for his entire career and retired in 2004 as the Director of the Research Station at Canal Point. In his retirement, he settled in Cherokee, AL. Throughout his life and retirement, he enjoyed all aspects of farming, gardening and raising rabbits. Jim passed away on March 31, 2014 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham. He was preceded in death by wife, Donna (Champion) Miller in 2011, son, Karl Miller in 2007, and sister, Phyllis Summers in 2013. Survivors include son, Kenneth Mance (Laurie) Miller of Hilliard, OH; daughter, Cheryl (Robert) Lassiter of Cherokee, AL; three grandchildren, Lauren Miller, Nicklaus Miller, Bethany Williams; and sister, Patricia (Joe) Bloomer of Bray, OK.
