John HARGROVE Obituary

HARGROVE, John Ashby

John Ashby Hargrove was born on February 25, 1976 in Fort Lauderdale, and passed away on December 18, 2013 in Boca Raton. Johnny was analytical, handsome, sometimes sarcastic, quiet, yet fun-loving. He was skeptical, resilient, tolerant, open minded, curious, caring, and insightful. Johnny graduated from The Tilton School in Tilton, New Hampshire. He received his BA in 1998 from Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, with a joint major in International Business Studies and German, and was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) fraternity. As a graduate student at The George Washington University, he was completing his final course and expecting to receive his Master of Professional Studies in Law Firm Management in the Spring of 2014. In addition to being in graduate school, Johnny was the Office Administrator for Hargrove, Pierson and Brown, in Boca Raton, and helped his father develop a boutique civil litigation practice. He was jubilant that while he was "in charge", the small firm received the coveted Tier 1 ranking in the 2014 Edition of U.S. News "Best Law Firms in America". His co-workers were like another family to Johnny, and the close-knit group will feel his loss deeply. With the roots of his Butler education running deep, Johnny was naturally a basketball fan. He loved the Bulldogs, the Miami Heat, and was a new fan of the Boston Celtics after they hired the former Butler coach, Brad Stevens. He was also an accomplished ballroom dancer, and had recently performed with the love of his life, Alena Kosolapova. He regularly attended the Indianapolis 500 with his Dad, and loved visiting New York and watching Broadway productions. With travel as a passion he visited England, France, Germany, Austria, Croatia, Italy, Canada, Thailand and Ghana. He and Alena planned to go to St. Petersburg, Russia on Christmas Day. Johnny is survived by his heart-broken father and mother, John and Mary Cheryl. His brother and best friend, Jimmy, died in November, 2009. His mourning family includes his grandparents, Sam and Betty Winn Fuller, his aunt, Deborah Fuller, his aunt, Karen and uncle, Craig Wolfe, his cousin, Carolyn Wolfe, and numerous distant cousins. A Memorial Service will be at held at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 23 at Babione Funeral Home (East Chapel), 1100 North Federal Highway, in Boca Raton, 33432, with burial to follow. Monsignor Vincent Kelly will conduct the service. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in memory of John Ashby Hargrove, '98, to Butler University's Campaign for Hinkle Fieldhouse, Office of Development, Butler University, 4600 Sunset Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46208. An online link to donate can be found at http://www.butler.edu/hinkle-campaign/give-now/.

December 15, 2014

So shocked to read tonight the horrible news of both Jimmy's and Johnny's deaths! Was recalling fond memories of all of you as I went on line to try to find an address. So stunned! I am at a loss for words, but have a heavy heart and can think of nothing else. Wave and I send our love to you two. Looking forward to a time when we can reconnect. With deepest sympathy, Brenda and Wave Townes

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Hargrove, This tragic news made it's way to me just recently when I read the In Memorium section of the most recent Butler magazine. Johnny was a friend. During our years together at Butler and later when we both lived in Atlanta, I always enjoyed his gentle way and deep insight into the various topics we conversed over. Our last meeting in Houston on the day of the 2011 national championship game is a time that I will now and forever cherish. I think we both expected to have random meetings for the rest of our lives, so long as Butler basketball remained relavent. Now that all seems so pointless. My deepest condolences go out to you. May the Lord help you stay strong everyday until your family is united again in Heaven.

Dear John & Mary Cheryl,
It is with profound sadness that I write to send you my condolences on the loss of your beloved son, Johnny. I hold you both in my heart; Mary Cheryl, you don't know me but I am a mother and feel your pain and while I know words are meaningless at this time, I hope they give you some comfort in your time of grief.
I will be planting trees in memory of Johnny; they will be planted in one or more of the most beautiful places on earth in either the forests of Montana or the Black Hills of South Dakota, second only to the beauty of our children.
Affectionately,
Lucy Green

Dear John and Mary Cheryl...My deepest sympathies to you both and am at a loss for words so for several days I looked for someone else's words that may bring you peace. "While we are mourning the loss of our friend, others are rejoicing to meet him behind the veil" - John Taylor. I read these words and I think of Jimmy on the other side greeting his big brother into the arms of Angels. Chere Evans

Dear John and Mary Cheryl, I just heard the news of the death of John. My heart is broken. So many memories of both boys when they were young. When you lived in your Bayview house by Gibbons High School, and Sandy and I would often care for the boys. Remember, I worked with you and Sandy when John was at McCune, and then later at Finley. I am now living in Northern NH with my husband. NH is truly God's country and I am sure your son enjoyed spending time here. As a graduate student finishing up my Pastoral Theology Degree at St. Joseph's College in Maine, I have learned that our lives are precious, short, and everything given to us has a meaning and is a gift. I know how you loved and cared for your children. Know that Christ is with you, carrying you through the darkness and sorrow. Also know that your sons have walked into eternity into the arms of our glorious blessed Lord. Keep your faith and know that I am praying for you and your family. All my thoughts and love, Bonnie Gibbs Kimnach, P.O. Box 298, Kearsarge, NH 03847-0298 [email protected], 603-986-2659.

Dear Sam and Betty Winn Fuller,

I hope this message reaches you. I am Jim Thayer's daughter, Ann Burris.

Not sure why I read the obituaries in this morning's Sun Sentinel but when I came upon your names and the Butler connection, I knew it must be the folks that I had breakfast with so many times in Sun City Center. In those days Butler was known for basketball but these days, football is also compelling the school into the headlines.

Please know that my heart goes out to you for the loss of this grandson and it seems that there was another loss before this one. I am so sorry. I would have attended the service in hopes of connecting with you but it was in today's paper and by the time I read it, 11 o'clock had come and gone.

I so understand loss at a too young age. I was very worried about my husband around the time of dad's funeral and sure enough, as soon as we returned to Maryland after it, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. He died a year ago in October. I have since moved back to Florida to our home on Royal Palm where I think your daughter and husband once lived.

At any rate, I am so very sorry for your loss and wanted to express my sympathy - for me, my mom and dad.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Hargrove,

I - and I know so many others - consider ourselves so fortunate to have been able to call Jimmy and Johnny our friends.
I will always cherish the memories made at St. Anthony, the LYC, Holiday Park - really by land or sea all over Ft. Lauderdale.
I don't think I ever remember anyone ever saying a bad thing about Johnny. A good sweet soul - of great character - always loving. The only solace I've been able to find while trying to imagine the pain in this heartbreaking loss is picturing the love in the embrace Johnny shared with his brother. I hope my Mother and Brother were there to greet him too. So sorry for this terrible loss.

John and Mary Cheryl:
Words cannot express our shock as well as our profound sympathy. It seems like only yesterday the Hargrove boys, and The Thompson three (Patrick, Maggie, and Betsy), among others "hanging" at LYC &/or other Broward County venues. Maybe a little mis-behaving at St. Anthony's during one of Fr. Hannon's usual long sermons. Some great memories.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you both.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Hargrove,

There are few words of comfort at this incredibly sad time. Both Johnny and Jimmy will always be regarded as loyal friends who lived life to its fullest. Growing up together, they were true friends you could always count on in good times as well as the bad. They were both great human beings who cared about everyone around them. They will be remembered fondly and missed terribly.

Our sincerest condolences,
