JULIA P. APPLEGATE HANSEN Julia Patterson Applegate Hansen, well known early “grande dame” of Chicago's elite society, age 87, passed away August 15, 2006. Of Chicago, wife of the late Ralph W. Applegate Sr. and the late Samuel Cyrus Hansen. Beloved mother of Ralph W., Jr. (Helen), cherished grandmother of Ralph W. “Trey” III and Elisa Eileen Applegate. Julia also leaves to cherish her memories her adored dog, “Dugan”. Julia was preceded in death by her mother, Bijou Moffat Wills (Mrs. Wayne) and brother, Jere W. Patterson, New York, NY. Julia was born in Evanston Hospital, Evanston, IL, attended The Girls Latin School of Chicago on Scott Street, attended Casa Alta Finishing School in Florence, Italy. She made her debut at supper dance at the Blackstone Hotel with the Yale Glee Club and Stag Line. She was the most photographed “Deb” that season and name the “Debutante of the Year.” Julia married Ralph W. Applegate, Sr., June 4, 1938, at St. Chrysostom's Church, Chicago. They were married 38 years until his death in 1976. She later married Samuel Cyrus Hansen, September 14, 1986, in Tiburon, CA and he died in 1998. Julia's numerous interests included modeling from 1936-1940 for the Rush-St. Luke's Fashion Show. She was active in the following charities for over 25 years: Traveler's Aid , Arden Shore, North Avenue Day Nursey, The Service Club (dancing in their Review), Junior League of Chicago (being a member since 1936). She was one of the first volunteers at St. Luke's Hospital. She resided on the near north side of Chicago since 1936. She also had residences in Arizona, Florida, and Califnornia. She loved to travel and visited over 120 countries and every state in the U.S.A. Favorite past times included dancing, hosting parties with different themes--born to entertain! Member or fomer member of Saddle & Cycle Club, Woman's Athletic Club, Tavern Club, International Club, Princeton Club of New York, Evanston Golf Club, Knollwood Country Club, Ocean Club, FL, Country Club of Florida, FL, Delray Beach Yacht Club, FL and Corinthian Yacht Club, CA. All the buildings where she lived in Chicago were built and managed by Applegate & Company, where her first husband, Ralph W. Applegate, Sr. was Chairman of the Board and President. Ralph was a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School. He was also Chairman of the Board of Casualty Insurance Company, until his death in August, 1976 while on Bob-O-Link Gold Course. Memorial gathering on Saturday, August 19, at 10:00 AM until time of funeral service, 11:00 AM at Drake & Son Funeral Home, 5303 N. Western Ave., Chicago. Interment private.
