Me and Julio down by the schoo-ool yard I used to sing this to Julio every time I saw him in and after high school. He was handsome, kind, and so funny. He got up in front of our senior high school speech and drama class and talked about his baby. The cute little M.G. convertible he bought working as a stock boy at Winn Dixie, how he'd get off work after it rained and just wipe out his seat with his T-shirt so he could get in it and go. No need letting a little bad weather hold anyone back. No one was raining on his parade and we all laughed the way he told it, pantomiming ringing his shirt out and bailing water again and again. Determination. Who would have dreamed that this boy whose parents came over with dreams and the clothes on their back from Cuba, would one day take his own dream and run with it and build a successful trucking company known for honest, devoted work and helping people? His mother was a Sweetheart who worked as a teacher's aide in Glades Central High School's Spanish classes. That kindness, caring, helpfulness, ready smile, reliability, and cheerfulness got passed down overflowingly. Julio took us all to the plays, out for pizza, he probably didn't make much at Winn Dixie, but he wasn't going to let any of us broke-as-a-joke folk foot the bill or go hungry, even when we insisted we weren't hungry. Then he goes and gets this truck one day, just a humble guy moving dirt, readying the foundations of homes, families, lives, raising and loving his kids to the moon, beyond and back, saving for another truck, then another, giving jobs to those who needed it if they had the drive and the honest desire to help others too. Named his company after the hardworking, driven little burro moving mountains in Cuba, Mulo. That kind of caring, a dream and hard work, that willingness to help others is quite a legacy to leave. He passed me one day when yet another foundation was readying and said, Hey Brenda, I gave you a lot of good dirt. The last time I saw Ju was one early morning at Dunkin Donuts, he was buying boxes of goodies for his trucking team and he was good naturedly like, No, I'll pick them out. People that reach goals like that don't step back and leave things to chance. Then he saw me and wrapped me up in a crazy Julio bear hug! Always the same Ol' Julio. My chair glides over the floor of a foundation he helped with long ago. Hey, Ju, thank you for the dirt! The first man was formed of the dust of the earth, materially we all one day return to it, we would have no life on this planet without it, and my friend saw within it the seeds of a dream and sustaining a family. My condolences, prayers to Meghan and the family for your loss, hope you take that torch of fiery dreams and run with it. Love and hugs Ju
