Family-Placed Funeral Notice

KATHLEEN KEER McGOWAN Kathleen Keer McGowan, 88, died on Friday, January 19, 2007 at The Waterford Health Center, Juno Beach, Florida. Born in Newark, New Jersey, she was a longtime resident of Great Notch, NJ before moving to Juno Beach over thirty years ago. After graduating from Miss Beard's School in Orange, NJ and Emma Willard School in Troy, New York, she attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, graduating in 1940 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Mrs. McGowan was a creative spirit and teacher, as well as an award-winning artist, poet and golfer. A past member of the Women's Club of Montclair, NJ and later the Women's Club of Upper Montclair, she served them as art chairperson. She presented many art shows and also worked as a volunteer art teacher at the Kessler Rehabilitation Institute in West Orange, NJ. Listed in “Who's Who of American Women” since 1972, she also served as secretary for her Smith alumnae class from 1990 to 1995. Daughter of the late Theodore F. and Florence MacRae Keer, Mrs. McGowan was also predeceased by: her beloved daughter, Kathy Allenby Ryan; grandson, Tom Ryan; husbands, Harold F. Allenby and John F. McGowan; and cousin, Jean-Rae Turner. She is survived by her cousin, William Richter of Newark, NJ; stepdaughter, Hope Allenby Personius of Buffalo Grove, IL; niece, Cynthia Mather and her husband Samuel of Pennington, NJ; goddaughter, Courtney B. Mather of San Francisco; and longtime family friend, Ellen Eismeier of Mountain Lakes, NJ. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date with interment at the Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery, Wrentham, Massachusetts.
