Loring E. HOLMES

1929 - 2018

Loring E. "Snag" Holmes passed away on July 21, 2018. Born in Daytona Beach, Florida March 18, 1929 to Francis H. Holmes and Alice Reese Holmes. Snag attended and was a swimmer for the University of Florida and graduated in 1951. After college he joined the U.S. Navy. He became a member of the Navy swim team at Jacksonville Naval Air Station. Upon discharge from the Navy he moved to West Palm Beach, Florida where he assisted coach Buddy Goodall for the Palm Beach Swimming Association swim team. Snag also was a swimmer for Florida Gold Coast. One of Snag's swimmers was six times U.S. Olympic swimming coach Eddie Reese. Snag also coached for North County Wahoo Masters in Jupiter, Florida under director Linda Irish Bostic. A swim meet is held in Snag's honor called The Inaugural Snag Holmes Masters Invitational hosted by Palm Beach Masters Wahoo. Snag was in the insurance industry for 40 years. The company before retiring at 62 was Loring E. "Snag" Holmes Inc. Snag served on the South Florida Fair Board as Director and Trustee since 1973. Also was past president Friends of Loxahatchee, past president Jupiter Tequesta Chamber of Commerce, past president Buyers & Sellers Club, past Commodore Buccaneer Yacht Club, served 22 years on the Loxahatchee River District. Snag was inducted into the University of Florida Grand Guard in 2001 and a member of the alumni association for 60 years. In 2010 Snag was inducted into the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame for swimming. Snag is survived by wife Dorothy Joan Holmes, daughter Cindy Potter, son Todd Runnells, son Steven Holmes, daughter Kathryn Heinlein, 9 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 25 from 10:00AM 11:00AM at Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 250 Center Street, Jupiter, Florida 33458, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00AM.
