Marshall Rinker Obituary

Marshall Rinker Jr., who served on the board of directors of the hugely successful West Palm Beach-based building materials company his father founded in 1926, died Monday in Belleair, on Florida's west coast. He was 79.

Born and raised in Palm Beach County, Mr. Rinker went on to become both a personnel director and a board member of Rinker Materials Corp., whose concrete poured into the roads and buildings that mapped Florida's growth. The company eventually became the state's biggest concrete producer.

Mr. Rinker's father, Marshall E. "Doc'' Rinker Sr., built the one-man, one-truck rock- and sand-hauling business into a half-billion-dollar organization before selling it to an Australian conglomerate for $515 million in 1988.

Marshall Rinker Jr. attended Palm Beach County High School and Rollins College before joining the family business. His career with the company spanned more than 30 years.

A passionate tennis player and prolific philanthropist, Mr. Rinker lived in Pinellas County the past 20 years. While living in Palm Beach County, he was a member and deacon of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in West Palm Beach and a Kiwanis Club member.

Mr. Rinker is survived by his wife, Mary; brothers David, of Atlantis, and John, of Palm Beach; eight children and stepchildren; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Largo.

We had many pleasnt times together both in the Kiwanis and political and other gatherings thru the years. Our families worked together in the Construction industry, where my father Vincent R. Gorham, Sr., was the Vice-President of Cleary Brothers Construction Company. We did much happy business together. Thank you for your life.
