Max Silverman Obituary


Family-Placed Funeral Notice

MAX SILVERMAN 91, Retired dentist and US Army officer, died April 25 in Wellington, Florida. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Colonel Silverman was a graduate of Central High School, LaSalle College, and Temple University Dental School. He resided in Wyncote, Pennsylvania and Wellington, Florida. COL Silverman served with distinction in the US Army and US Army Reserve for 39 years. He fought with General George Patton in World War II, earning a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. After World WAR II, he maintained a dental practice in Philadelphia and remained active in the US Army Reserve, serving in various dental units in the Philadelphia area, retiring from the Army Reserve in November 1971 and from his civilian dental practice in 1973. During his Army Reserve service, he was personally responsible for recruiting over 50% of the AMEDD members into the USAR in Pennsylvania. He personally wrote the training exercises and had oversight of readiness and deployment for all medical units in the Mid Atlantic Region. In recent years COL Silverman was an active member of Temple Beth Torah in Wellington, Florida, and especially enjoyed weekly Torah study and discussion. COL Silverman was married for 56 years to the late Estelle Zucker Silverman of New York. Survivors include two children, Dr. Jacqueline Kieff of Brookline, Massachusetts, and Brigadier General Ronald D. Silverman of Annandale, Virginia; five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Graveside services with full military honors will be at 11AM Thursday, May 5, 2005 in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
