Paulette Fetzer Obituary

This morning, students at Loggers Run Middle School will hear their principal make an announcement that already has brought their teachers to tears.

Their friend and mentor Paulette Fetzer has died.

"I couldn't bring myself to do it today," Carol Blacharski, principal of the suburban Boca Raton school, said Monday. "It's going to be extremely hard. We're not going to see our friend again."

Mrs. Fetzer, of Delray Beach, was assistant principal of Loggers Run for 22 years and retired in 2006, around the same time she was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. She worked in the Palm Beach County and Broward County school systems for more than 38 years.

She was the wife of Delray Beach Vice Mayor Fred Fetzer. They were high school sweethearts, married and had two sons. The Fetzers were planning to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary in December.

Mrs. Fetzer was diagnosed during her husband's campaign for the March 2006 election. Although he considered dropping out of the race, she made sure he didn't.

"She felt it was important that I keep doing what I was set out to do," he said. "She didn't want her illness to prevent me from doing that."

Mrs. Fetzer was 61, with dreams and goals of her own. Blacharski said Mrs. Fetzer didn't want to quit her job and that she worked up until the last few days before her major surgery on Valentine's Day of last year. They were friends for 18 years.

"She was totally dedicated to this school," Blacharski said.

"She put people back together after they got upset," the principal said. "When she was going to do a project, it was done meticulously. She was so young. So full of life."

She mentored the beginning teachers and taught them in a nurturing way. Other teachers admired her for her calm demeanor and her eye for fashion.

Even during lunch duty, Mrs. Fetzer was dressed to the nines.

Mrs. Fetzer liked to sew just as her mother did. She refinished furniture and loved to entertain during the holidays.

She had a knack for making people feel special and she always worried about others. Even up until the day she died.

"She gave me a to-do list," Fred Fetzer said. "One of the rods in the kitchen is loose. She has elderly relatives I promised her I would take care of. She knew she was dying and that's what she was worried about more was other people. She wasn't worried about herself."

A visitation will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kraeer Funeral Home, 1353 N. Federal Highway, Boca Raton. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Spanish River Presbyterian Church, 2400 Yamato Road, Boca Raton.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to Spanish River Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.

I went to Loggers' Run Middle School from 2002-2005. Mrs. Fetzer was always there to help me and any of my friends when ever we needed help. She made us feel human and loved even if evreyone in the school hated us. I can remember her at her lunch duties as they were yesturday, she would always help people in lunch. All we needed to do was ask for help. I missed her when I left Loggers and moved on to Olympic Heights High School. But hearing what has happened, I feel so sad. My prayers go to Fred Fetzer. Only God knows how you feel right now. Just know onw thing. One of the students that Mrs. Fetzer helped is greatfull that she was there. I am praying for the Fetzer family.

I was upset when Mrs.Fetzer left loggers run last year.i got in alot of trouble in 6th grade. almost every day i would be sent to her office. She would never yell at me.instead she would talk to me as if i was an adult not a child. She would tell me the ways to deal with my problems the right way. her outfits were out of this world, every pin she owned matched her shoes!i really injoyed seeing her during all of the holiday seasons, she had amazing cristmas sweaters.i still cant belive she passed away. She was every little girls role model, a real classy looking lady.i wanna thank Mrs. Fetzers family for inviting the loggers run young womens chorus to sing at her service. i am Honored to be apart of remebering this wonderful women.Rest In Peace Mrs. Fetzer,i will always remeber you!

I went to Loggers Run Middle school 20 years ago. I had a VERY tough time in middle school...I got into trouble a lot and hated going to school. If it was not for Mrs. Fetzer I would have never made it through that time in my life. She was ALWAYS there to listen to me and I knew she actually heard and cared about what I was saying to her. I spent a lot of time in her office. Over the years I have thought fondly of her so many times. I pray that her family knows how much of an impact that she had on her students and that she changed my life for the better. I will always remeber her and all of the things she did for me. You know how much of an impact she had on me...20 years later and I am in tears. My prayers go out to her family, if she touched my life like this I know she will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved her.

We met Paulette only once, but we've known Fred for many years. She was a special person, well-suited to her special "soul-mate". We are deeply saddened by this terrible loss. It is good to know that she has moved on to bigger and better things. Our thoughts and prayers are with this family.

I was 22 and had no clue how to be a teacher when I met Paulette at LRCMS. She mentored me and taught me how to be a kind and caring teacher. Now 20 years later I still use the lessons learned in her office. The Fetzer family was truly blessed and continues to be, through the memories of such a wonderful woman.

Paulette was one of the kindest people I have ever met. I had the pleasure of working with Paulette at Loggers' Run Middle for 14 years. Paulette had such a great sense of humor, yet was one of the most professional people I have ever worked with and for. She will be greatly missed.

Ms. Fetzer is the nicest administrator I have ever met. She helped me a lot when I started my first year of teaching at Loggers. She has the kindest soul and the most loving heart and has inspired me to continue my teaching career. I will always remember her as my mentor and friend. My prayers for her family and God bless them.
