Family-Placed Obituary

PETER P. CARBONE "Pete" Peter P. Carbone (Pete), age 87, of Singer Island, FL passed away on Wednesday, December 1, 2011, in Charlottesville, VA following a stroke. Pete was born in Albany, NY. After serving in the U.S. Army as infantry in Europe during World War II, he married Marie C. Piazza, also of Albany. Pete spent his entire career with John Hancock Life Insurance Company beginning as a sales agent in Albany. He left Albany in 1964 and rose through the ranks with John Hancock to ultimately become Executive Vice President of Sales and a corporate officer in the John Hancock headquarters in Boston, MA. During that period, Pete and Marie and their family resided in North Andover, MA. Pete and his wife Marie retired to Singer Island, FL in 1987. His retirement years were spent actively traveling to visit family and friends, playing golf and as an active community contributor. Pete was Vice President of his homeowers association for almost 20 years at Water Glades where he resided. He was chairman of the men's club at Ballen Isles Country Club. Pete is survived by his wife, Marie, daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Bob Shanley of Scottsdale, AZ, their children Stephen Shanley and Meaghan Shanley, his daughter Patricia Coffin of Charlottesville, VA and her children Peter Coffin, Gregory Coffin, Jack Coffin, Corinna Coffin. Pete's was full of life until his unfortunate stroke and his good humor, can-do attitude, and ability to make the most of any situation distinguished Pete as an admired leader among friends and family. He will be greatly missed by his wife, children and six grandchildren, his family and friends in Albany, his friends in Florida and all whose lives he touched. In spite of all the people I've met over the years (and I'm 80 now), Pete is still right up there as one of those whom I admire and hold as someone to emulate. I still remember how he kept his cool under pressure, inspired with his words and actions, and enjoyed life. He even enjoyed pitching pennies in the office with members of his staff from time to time. I still have the pennies he won from me - and gave back in a gift box when I transferred to another office. Great man. I never met his kids, but I'm sure his traits were passed on to his family - and that's wonderful.

Pete's still in my memories and I actually held one of his business cards in my hands yesterday as I checked through items I gad saved. He was definitely a positive influence in my life, and I cherish that.

Pete was - and still is - one of my most admired leaders and mentors who inspired me in Utica and while working for him at the Home Office. While I've been retired for several years now, he's still in my mind as someone to emulate. I also believe that, if we had ever played golf together, he would have taken my pennies then as he did when I worked for him back in Utica. Rest in peace good friend.

Dear Marie and family:
Sorry to hear about Pete's passing. He was a wonderful man. He (and my dad) put me on he road to financial independence back in 1968 when I purchased a JH life insurance policy at age 19. The policy is still active 44 years later. I will always remember those Christmas eve feasts at your home and, of course, Marie's delicious seven fish dishes!

Dear Marie:
I just learned about Pete's passing. Please accept my condolences. Pete was my District Manager while I was an office supervisor trainee in Utica. He inspired me, and I always looked up to him as a mentor, leader, and a wonderful human being. We used to pitch pennies in the Utica office, and he presented me with his winnings ($2.87 in a box) when I was promoted to another office. I still have them. We met again when we both worked in the home office, and I was honored to work with him for a few more years before he retired. You and I met once just before I left Utica. You had just remodeled your home and expected to live there for a while, but wound up moving shortly after that. I admired Pete greatly, and pray that all your memories are happy ones; mine certainly are. My prayers are with you and your family.

Marie Carbone,
I remember you and Pete very fondly from our association at John Hancock in Boston. I was part of the staff of the old District Agency department and I always enjoyed being in Pete's company. One of the things that I remeber is that he rearely mixed business with pleasure. If we were at a cocktail party or company diner, he preferred to talk about family, swap stories about "the old days" and tell a few jokes. He was a delightful man with a wonderful laugh and I am very sorry for your loss.

We will miss Peter's wonderful smile and personality. We were so lucky to have both Pete and Marie touch our lives here on Singer Island. It was a great honor and pleasure to serve on the Water Glades Board with Peter.
