Family-Placed Obituary
ROBERT CUMMINGS Robert Cummings, of Montreal and Palm Beach, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 10, 2009, in West Palm Beach, Florida. Born in Montreal, Canada in 1921, he was a month shy of his 88th birthday. His wife of 61 years, Marion, predeceased him in September of 2005. The son of Maxwell and Queenie Cummings, Bob grew up in Montreal during the Depression and attended local schools before registering at Dartmouth College in the late 1930s. During the war he served briefly in the Royal Canadian Air Force and then joined Maxwell Cummings and Sons Holdings. In 1968 he became President of Cummings Properties, Limited, a firm he built in partnership with his late brother Jack. During the 1970s and 1980s he was active in real estate in South Florida, where he spent much of his later life. During his younger years he was a prominent member of the Montreal Jewish Community. He was a past chairman of the Combined Jewish Appeal, an Honorary Trustee of the Montreal Museum of Art, Governor of the YM-YWHA and director of the Montreal Neurological Hospital. He was also involved in the development of Cummings House, the home of Montreal's Jewish community agencies, whose Combined Jewish Appeal conferred upon him the Michael Hirsch Trophy. Bob was the beloved father of Jane, Peter and James and father-in-law of Julie and Alice. He was the brother-in-law of Norma Cummings of Montreal and Gates Barnet of Albany, NY. He will be sadly missed and warmly remembered by his grandchildren Casey and Dina, Kate, Justin, Anthony, Caroline and Olivia, and by his great grandchildren Megan, Nathan and Maxwell. Funeral Service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. West, on Tuesday, January 13 at 11 a.m. Burial at Congregation Shaar Hashomayim Cemetery, Mt. Royal Boulevard. Shiva through Thursday evening. Dear Janie, Peter & Jimmy,
My deepest sympathy on the passing of your Dad - a loving parent & husband, a good friend, a colleague, a mentor. There are few people who when they leave this world, a light goes out. Your father is one of those. I learned much from him with respect to real estate and to life. This is a profound loss! The world will be less bright without him. Robert M.
