Robert Green Obituary

Family-Placed Obituary

ROBERT EUGENE GREEN "Bob" Robert "Bob" Eugene Green passed away peacefully Sunday morning, August 28 at his home in Chicago, IL, following a courageous and relentless battle against brain cancer. He was 60. Over the course of his five-year journey, Bob was surrounded by family and friends, embraced and enveloped in their love and devotion. They, in turn, were inspired by his grace, strength, perseverance, resilience, hope and sense of humor. He would never let it be said that he lost his battle against cancer; his battle was about standing up to cancer, about living a good life, and because he accomplished that, he won. Bob will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Born in Gary, IN, Bob was a 1969 graduate of Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, WI, where he was involved in wide-ranging activities, from National Merit Society; Honor Roll and Student Council to Choir; Drama, Ski and PR clubs; Athletic Trainer and Class Treasurer. He received his Bachelor of Arts in English from Colgate University in Hamilton, NY in 1973, where he also sang in the University Chorus. He earned his Master's in Business Administration from the University of Chicago in 1975. After briefly working in New York, NY, as a men's wear buyer for Abraham & Strauss department store, he returned to Indiana to manage the family grocery business, eventually owning his own stores, from which he retired in 2005. He then started a second career in real estate with Koenig and Strey in Chicago. He was a longstanding member of the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS) at the Howard Brown Health Center in Chicago. He also was a longtime member of the Chicago Gay Men's Chorus, sat on the board of the Bailiwick Chicago theatre company and was a volunteer for The Saints, which helps the not-for-profit performing arts community in Chicago. He is survived by his partner, William D. Lieber, Jr. "Bill"; his father, Eddie, of Munster, IN, and West Palm Beach, FL; his sister, Linda Green-Brown of Valparaiso, IN; his brother-in-law, Ken Brown, and his niece, Laura Brandt of Seattle, WA, as well as aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends. His mother, Lillian (Moskovitz) preceded him in death in 2009. A memorial service celebrating Bob's life will be held Thursday, September 1, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, at Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center, 220 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in remembrance of Bob to the Northwestern Hospital Brain Tumor Institute (www.braintumorinstitute.org) and the American Brain Tumor Association (www.abta.org). It is with appreciation that we receive this opportunity to express sentiments about Bob 8 years after his passing. Surely all friends and family can confirm our experience of speaking about him fondly even to this day. That alone tells of a person's life having substance and meaning. A wonderful man and a wonderful legacy.

I was so saddened to hear of Bob's passing while reading the Colgate Scene. Bob was one of my favorite classmates at Colgate. We were on the French Study Group in Dijon together and he was such a delight. We all had nicknames and his was Monsieur LeVert. He had a wonderful knack for walking into a room and making us all smile. He was such as great pal as we experienced, (and laughed alot), all of the differences between French life and that in the U.S. I regret that I lost touch with Bob over the years since Colgate, but he has been in my thoughts often over the years and I will continue to keep him in my thoughts. My deepest condolences to Bill, and all of Bob's family and friends.
Fondly, Colgate Friend Sue Stone ( Mlle LaPierre)

Dear Bill,
I just received the sad news of Bob and send my heartfelt sympathy to you. Besides the benefits of our yoga classes, the two of you were a joyous, fun, spark to those hours.

Bill,
We are so glad you gave us the opportunity to tell Bob, in person, just how much he meant to us and his importance to our lives. Now it's time to tell you. We both hope that at the time of our greatest need we have someone who will give the unselfish, loving and complete support that you provided for Bob. You both have been a living leason on what a productive and inspirational life together means.

As a first cousin of Bob, and growing up with him I remember how he tought me to love and appreciate musicals by preparing before I went to see one. He told me to get the soundtrack and read the notes about the musical. Bob I will really miss you and treasure all the good times we had together.

In the past year, I came to care, know and share in Bob's triumps through Bill and his loving narratives about Bob. One of my favorites was Bob and his love of singing. Bill relayed with pride and humor that while Bob struggled to speak, he could certainly belt out all the words to his best loved songs.

Bob, the heavely chorus just grew lovelier and sweeter with your voice. Please watch over Bill, your dad, family and friends and help ease the sorrow in their hearts.

Prayers and thoughts go out to Bill and Bob's family. Although I only knew Bob through Bill, there were many hello's over speaker phones and a smiling picture of Bob that put a smile on my face during difficult times. May you celebrate Bob and all the wonderful memories that you have held in your heart. Living is not a matter of counting years, but making the years count. In the tribute to Bob, he made all his years count.
