Family-Placed Funeral Notice
ROBERT A. MATTHEWS 90 of Boynton Beach, Florida, formerly of Fair Haven, NJ passed away on June 19, 2004. He lived in Boynton Beach for 14 years. He was born in Long Branch, New Jersey on April 16, 1914 and graduated from Long Branch High School in 1932. He was a graduate of Ryder College where he received a Bachelor of Science degree. Upon graduation he went to work for Boro Busses Co. in Red Bank as a bookkeeper and was with the company for over 50 years. Throughout the years he helped expand the business throughout the county, state and entire country. He served in many diverse roles as he worked his way up the corporate ladder, ending his career as Vice President. He was very active in the fire department and First Aid Squad in Fair Haven. He was the oldest living ex fire chief and the oldest living member of the Fair Haven Fire Department. Mr. Matthews was very active in Fair Haven politics for 16 years. He served as a councilman in the early 1960's and went on to be Mayor for 6 years. He was a member of the Red Bank Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce and the Red Bank Elks Club. He was a member of the Board of the Monmouth County Transportation and was instrumental in the formation of the N.J. transit system to provide bus service for commuters. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alice White Matthews, his daughter Karen Smith and her husband Curtis Smith of Boynton Beach, Florida, his sons Robert C. Matthews and his wife Peggy Matthews of Monmouth Beach, New Jersey and Thomas A. Matthews and Robin Matthews, his wife of Boca Raton, Florida, ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. A Memorial Service was held at Scobee- Combs-Bowden Funeral Home in Boynton Beach, Florida on Friday, June 25, 2004 at 2:00PM. In New Jersey, a Memorial Service will also be held at the Fair Haven Fire House on July 31, 2004 at 11:00AM. Donations are being accepted in lieu of flowers to the Fair Haven Fire Department.
