Robert Rich Obituary

Robert Rich Sr., Rich Products founder, dies at 92 in Palm Beach By CAROLYN THOMPSON
Associated Press Writer

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Frozen food pioneer Robert E. Rich Sr., whose invention of the first nondairy whipped topping in 1945 launched Rich Products Corp., has died.

Rich was surrounded by family at his Palm Beach, Fla., home when he died Wednesday at age 92, the company said.

"For more than 60 years, Bob Rich Sr. has been a great motivator and the source of inspiration for our company and our associates around the world," said William Gisel Jr., chief operating officer of Rich Products, which employs 7,000 people internationally with sales of more than $2.5 billion.

With the death of its chairman, the company will continue to operate under its president, Robert Rich Jr.

"I have had the honor of learning from my father as we worked side by side for more than 40 years in this great family business environment," the younger Rich said, "experiencing firsthand his passion and commitment."

Rich began his business career in 1935 as owner of Wilber Farms Dairy in 1935. In 1945, while war food administrator in Michigan and with milk scarce, he began investigating the plentiful soybean and came up with a soybean-based whipped topping touted as better than cream because it was more stable and could be frozen.

Rich's Whip Topping remains a staple in school food service, restaurants and supermarket bakeries. The company's product line also includes breads, pizza dough, seafood and appetizers.

"It's hard to measure the impact Robert Rich had on the frozen food industry but suffice it to say his contributions are both monumental and legendary," said Nevin Montgomery, president and chief executive of the National Frozen and Refrigerated Foods Association.

Rich was one of the first four inductees in the National Frozen Food Industry Hall of Fame in 1990.

A year later, Rich was inducted into the inaugural class of the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame, in recognition of a lifelong involvement in sports. Rich was chairman of the Buffalo Bisons, Cleveland's Triple-A farm team, and oversaw construction of a downtown baseball stadium for the team. The Buffalo Bills' football stadium bore the Rich name for decades, after Rich purchased through Rich Products the naming rights in 1972.

Erie County Executive Joel Giambra called Rich "a dear friend and a true pioneer in the Buffalo business community."

Rich's first wife, Janet Rich, died in 1998. The couple had three children.

Rich is survived by his second wife, Vicki Danielle McDuffee; two sons, Robert Jr. and David; two stepdaughters, Stacey Bankston and Kristi LaRoche; 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Private services were scheduled for Saturday in Palm Beach. A ceremony in Buffalo was being planned for a later date.

My mother, Lorraine Odien, worked with Rich Products for many years and thoroughly enjoyed her association with the company.I will always remember the generosity and kindness of Mr. Rich when my mother got sick while vacationing in Florida. While I am not certain I ever met Mr. Rich's children, I feel like I grew up living and breathing Rich Products and I know my mom was proud to be among the Rich Products Family. I offer my heartfelt sympathy to all who are now mourning the loss of this "giant of a man." May he rest in peace and may God fill your hearts with peace! Terry M. Odien

Vicki,

We are Sorry for your loss and offer condolences to you and all the family. We are grateful to have known and worked for Bob. We will always remember his loyalty and his love for people, business, sports and his extended family. The memory of his wit and love for a good story will always remain with us.

His graciousness as a host and his ability to make you feel welcome no matter how busy was uniquely his charm.I will always remember

his special attention to detail when the new lab was being built and his ability to remember people and names made him a very special person, this was especially notable when he walked the floor of any of his plants or the labs when he would recall people's names that made the people with whom he came into contact feel very special.

I know he will be missed by all,but what a legacy he leaves behind. God Bless.

I don't know much about Mr. Rich's peronsonal values or politics, but I know that his soy based desserts made is easier for me and others to tranition to a plant-based diet. For that I am thankful, and I'm sure the animals are too.

My home for 15 years sat at the edge of Hole # 1 on Palm Beach National. I met Mr Rich when he walked to the fringe to putt in. I found him to be a warm person. Later when I joined the Club, whenever we met he greeted me warmly. My thoughts are to his family. Yours was a kind parent. We know he rests in peace.

In 1989 I was told by a friend of a golf course where everyone was treated like family (members & workers)and you wouldn't know the owner from the janitor. I started playing this course (Palm Beach National) and later was introduced to Bob. Within 6 months I bought a home on the course. I introduced Bob to my wife & children. It still amazes me to this day how I would see him playing golf, go out to say hello and he would always ask by name how my each family member was. If I had my kids on the golf cart he would remember their names and ask how they were doing with that wide smile of his. His passion for golf is unmatched by anyone I've ever known. He brought to Palm Beach a touch of Buffalo that will remain forever. I will miss him very much, but will never forget how he touched the people who knew him and especially my family.

I have a wonderful memory of Mr. Rich. I was a young college student at Palm Beach Atlantic, anticipating a move to Kentucky to attend seminary. We lived off the 5th hole of Palm Beach National Golf and C.C. and I got a job on the course maintenance crew. Mark, the superintendant and my boss was gracious to let me work as my schedule would permit. To this day, I remember those days as carefree and a lot of fun. Every now and again Mr. Rich would be in town and would come out to play the course. Our instructions were clear: When Mr. Rich plays through, turn off the equipment, make yourself invisible, and let his foursome enjoy a nice experience. There was always a buzz when Mr. Rich was on the course. Once when playing through near where I was working, he stopped to talk to me and told me I was doing a nice job. For someone of his influence and stature, I always found him friendly, relaxed, and considerate of those around him. We always looked forward to Mr. Rich's visits, and did everything we could to make the course nice for him. Now a pastor in Royal Palm Beach, I still think back to those days with a lot of fondness.

We pray for his family.

God Bless,

Dr. E. Dale Locke

Robert Rich Sr. and the entire Rich Products family were extremely good to my wonderful father, Marvin Kahn. My father too believed in the success of Rich's. I still remember visiting my father at Corporate headquarter's, a memory I could never forget. The Sabres and Bisons games, what fun!! Today (2/16/06) marks the fourteenth Anniversary of my dad's passing, it feels like yesterday, yes even now. I know that your family will remain strong and close. I wish we could bring back time but, it is only our Lord's control to make his decisions. Like my dad always said from Billy Joel's song,"Only the good die young." Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time.

God Bless

Wife is a native of Orchard Park and a Big Bills Fan even though I brought her down here in the land of sunshine (South Florida) she still hasn't switched allegiances to the 'Fins! I believe it was like that with Mr. Rich as he always loved his community of WNY.
